I have been in conversations with a fellow from France. Here is a bit from his latest message:

OK. So there's a book called "Le Perret" published in 1710 and guarded at the
Museum of Thiers (middle of France).
The woman who is in charge of the museum emailed me, very kindly. There are no
real balisongs in the book but knives which were used as measure instruments (?)
and which looks like balisongs. She invites me to come and visit the museum. She
will show me the book.
So next time I go to my parents house (near Thiers), I'll see it. I'll try to
take photos, to check if there are re-edition. Of course I'll keep you informed.

I should go there before the end of June.

Next stop: Thiers, France!

Stop the preses.. the skeptics have now been enthralled... Time to edit the history blurb I have on my page. I doubt Palacio will, but I guess I am more an urban cowboy than a Filipino patriot.. that's cool news Gollnick. Keep us informed.

SO.. you are.. french.. or mixed european like you once mentioned?

No, not a drop of French blood in me. My family background is Eastern European, Scandinavian, and, and I'm told it doesn't show, Irish.

I, like most all, assume when I started that the Balisong design was Filipino in origin. That's what I was told. But, I increasingly became convinced that it is european and have, lately, focused on France.

Ruler knives! Knives disguised as rulers. I think you can see some later ones in Levine's guide. But 1710? Whew!
