What's here

?

My HEST of course :cool::cool:!!!!!

A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E knife, very nice in the hand and I think it may be the perfect size as a bag knife (BOB, grab bag, EDC bag). I've only been playing with it for a few hours, so no pics yet, but here's what I think so far:

  1. Pry bar: Will work very well in it's intended use, with a very good size. Does not get in the way with the knife in a saber grip or even in the reversed ice pick grip. Will be a problem if you want to switch grips on the fly, but since this blade is NOT a fighter, I don't think fancy ninja handwork is an issue.
  2. Bottle opener: I liked it . Not as a bottle opener (I still think it's silly, specially on a survival blade), but it works very well as jimping.
  3. Jimping: Too shallow for my thumb, so I don't have enough friction to keep my thumb in place - I bet it's because of the black coating, that makes the indentations shallow. With gloves on it would even be harder. But if I slide my thumb a bit further, over the bottle opener, it works perfectly.
  4. Handle: Perfect for my hand, not too big, not too small. Of course it could have been longer, but size is an issue here, so the handle is long enough. The hollow handle is a nice feature, though I still haven't decided what to put in there so far. Even so, I already have a washer on the lanyard to use on the screws.
  5. Smell: Smell? What's that smell :barf:?!? The skull burnt onto the handle made a real stink, and when I got the blade out of the package I checked my shoes to see if I hadn't stepped on a doggy land mine on the way home. A few hours out of the bag and it's almost gone now.
  6. Edge: Shaving sharp out of the box. Not what I would call laser sharp, but sharp enough to the point that it's very good as it is now and I don't need to mess with it. Though I think that if I strop it it will become laser sharp.
  7. Sheath: Very good, well made and the blade locks into place firmly.
Yep, it's definitively a keeper ! I honestly didn't expect to like it so much, I was even afraid that with all the hype around this blade lately I got carried away. But no, the thing is REALLY good! I can't recommend it more.

My hat is off to the folks at ESEE, you sirs do know how to make a very fine knife

!
And yes, before someone asks, this is not my last ESEE blade. Definitively not!

Makes me want to buy one now ;) Thanks for sharing your impression.

You WON'T be disappointed!
A cracking knife, very well planned and executed. ESEE really hit the nail in the head when they cooked it up - as a small survival knife it works terrifically.

I couldn't agree more. My HEST is my favorite knife. I just can't stop playing with it.

Hope you guys have better luck then me in finding it :(. When I decided I was going to get a HEST, I looked everywhere and in every web store it was either out of stock or if it was in stock but they did not ship overseas . But finally I was able to score one at KnifeWorks.

Thanks for the review. I've been trying to decide between the Izula and the HEST.

:D :D :D
I know, I know, but it has been a busy week. I'll get some this weekend and spread some porn here.

Ok, you guys made my conscience guilty so I rushed home after work to get a few shots :p.

Initially I was REALLY leery about the bottle opener on the spine of the blade, but you know what, it ain't that bad. As far as a bottle opener goes on a survival blade it is and always be silly, but as a support spot for your thumb it works quite well.

The first thing I did when I received the HEST was to get a washer in the lanyard, to so that I can easily remove the scales. I could even find a black one, in the perfect size. The handle compartment is still empty - I still haven't decided what to put in there .

I'm sorry I can't remember who, but somebody on another thread was saying that the pry bar on the handle would get in the way. My hand is kind of big, 94,7 mm on it's widest part at the base of the fingers (that's XL size for Mechanix gloves) and as you see the handle fits comfortably in my hand.

I'm afraid this was the most exciting pic I could make in terms of action shots, because my backyard is pretty small :D. Got quite a lot of stuff to do tomorrow, but if I can I'll try to get some decent action shots.
