My knife has arrived! GEC #54 Harness jack with antique horsecut bone, man this thing is sweet, no pics seeing as I don't have a camera :D But here's one of somebody elses. It's not really a nail breaker, tougher than anything I've had before though (Haven't had many) the bone is stunning to be honest, I wasn't expecting it to look this good, and the punch should be a good multi purpose tool I think, should make a decent pipe bowl scraper. Needs a good oiling, and I bought some mineral oil for that. It's got the "1 of 50" thing on the off side of the main blade which I'm not too big a fan of but it's a user anyway so doesn't matter too much.

well worth the wait! minor flaws like a small chip out of the bolster on the bottom right and a scratch on the blade but, like I said, working knife :D couldn't be happier. Better make this a bit interactive I suppose! Post some pics of your harness jacks!...got a little too excited with this one I think lol.

I wish I could, that is a pattern that I do not have yet. I really like the GEC's but just have not sprung on any yet.

Well this is my first GEC, I think this pattern is a love it or hate it kinda deal, the punch makes it or breaks it.

Congrats Jesse! Very nice looking bone - hope yours is equally as fine as the one posted. That's a handsome knife with the long pull, swedge, and threaded bolsters!

There's nothing wrong with being excited about getting a new knife. We all know the feeling.;) Once you get a good patina going on the blade, the etching will all but disappear. I like the jigging on that bone as well.

Great HJ pattern! If you're anything like me you'll love it.. I had this same pattern with a master Spear blade instead of a Clip that I got in a trade some years back with one of the finniest members here in Traditional.. Produced by Queen--S&M and in very nicely jigged greenish brown bone and 1095 hi-carbon steel that I used hard and, got wicked sharp as she developed a fine patina..

.. Of coarse just when I worked her in perfect for an EDC, my hunting partner/gunsmith whined and moaned that he wanted to trade for it because blah, blah, blah, ect.. :p.. And made my an offer I couldn't refuse for much needed services rendered on several of my firearms at the time.. Here is the knife when it landed to me new..

FYI on the punch blade:

1st, it comes incredibly sharp from the factory, or at least mine did. Be careful. 2nd, I found at least a dozen uses for a good punch over many years of using them. 3thd, once you see how many chores the punch will effortlessly accomplish you'll be hooked.

I have a question about the punch on the GEC knives. I've kinda been eyeballing one of their Cattle Barons. Does the punch function as a reamer (it looks like it would)? If so, how does it compare to the reamers on SAKs? I don't like the reamers on the plastic handle SAKs (where they fold from the middle of the back), but I love how fantastic the ones on the ALOX handled ones work (like the Soldier or Pioneer). I used to keep myself occupied in class by drilling holes in pennies with the reamer on my Soldier.

Planterz,

I believe you'll find the punch on these as sharp a reamer tool as you will find on a knife anywhere. Its a vintage design as I recall from the old days circa 19th -- early 20th century.. I've personally used this punch on wood, plastic, hard rubber and of coarse lots of leather. It makes the punch on SAK's look like toy tools.. Be warned though, this punch has an edge just as sharp as any knife blade. My fishing buddy laid his thumb wide open on a trip we took to the lake last year on the same punch blade/tool on my Queen Tear Drop HJ pattern.

Thanks Sunnyd, that's a nice color of bone on yours! I'm liking mine a lot so far, found that i can see light between the punch spring and the copper liner but it isn't visible otherwise, gave it a rub with some mineral oil and a few drops to try to smooth out the action. I took a couple pretty crap cellphone pics at the pub this morning, figured it couldn't hurt to throw them up here :D

Anthony,

Durn you! How am I gonna explain to my wife that I need another slipjoint knife because I do not have a harness Jack yet w/ punch blade? She will remind of the 30 something I already have. This pattern haunts me. At first, when I joined this forum, I said, "meh, that punch thing is not a blade.....it looks wierd.......it does not belong on a knife....." Now, creeping into my "want" list is a harness jack, because of the punch. Your post just clinched it. I think I will ask Santa Claus for one. Your fault pal. I hope you can live with yourself now.

Thanks. Looks like I might get one if there's enough left of my tax return next year after I buy a new TV.

Yup! I'm glad I could be of service. :p ;) :D .. But seriously, you wont regret it.

This is ironic as my 10 year old Sanyo TV's red color just crapped out on me here so my reds are now black. Its like being color blind. :( Now I've got to use my knife money to get a new one. Upside is most all the big box brand stores have 42 inch'ers on sale for 275. and up at the moment. :)

Best,
Anthony

Just wait for all the other colors to go and learn to love black and white shows, then you'll have knife money still :D

Jess,

Well said. :) You sound a little like my old lady   ;).. I don't watch much boob tube other than the news and a few others. I do enjoy some real old timey movies now and again, and they are all mostly B&W anyway, so she's been asking me what I'm a bi!ch'n about!. :D :D.

I regularly carry a S&M like Anthony's. EXCELLENT knife! I also have the same knife in ebony, but it's not made the jump to EDC...yet.

Just look at the wonderful colors that the blade is showing with the start of such a fine patina... Now I am missing mine even more.

Great image, Todd.
