It's madness

Hey Y'all,

I just thought I'd post an accusatory thread since it's a rainy day here, I'm on spring break, and thus my job as a professor is to evaluate and grade. I have no real idea why I ventured over to this part of the world, but you got me hooked on this nifty little bits of craftsmanship and design, and I can't get out. Prior to my visit here, I hadn't owned a traditional knife (except for the odd SAK) since I was a kid. Fast forward to a couple of months later, and here I am, gone off the deep end.

Thanks! This has turned out to be a lot of fun, and so far I've corresponded with some really fine people. One of the coolest things is being able to have direct contact with the great people that make these fine tools. I really appreciate the camaraderie and warm welcome you have all shown.

Without further ado, here is my small, but growing, collection as it stands. I fear it will only continue to grow as I make more fine discoveries here. But at least I'll be able to blame some of it on my sons as they grow old enough to carry a knife. My apologies for the mediocre iPhone pictures.

Cheers,
Daniel

It IS a kind of madness, isn't it? I've never collected anything in my life, and all my (other) hobbies involve actively doing something. It's weird to me to have a hobby that is effectively buying things I don't need. Yet I find these knives capture my interest and I'm off buying another.

Same thing here. I barely even need one pocket knife. Peanut or small SAK should cover everything I need, barring kitchen and fix-up work around the house, and for those tasks I've got other more utilitarian knives and tools.

If I were to conceive of every reasonable need, I might need three sizes of pocket knife: tiny, medium, large, and maybe a spare or alternate in each size for a total of 6.

I guess it must be similar to collecting coins you don't intend to spend, or stamps you don't plan to use to mail letters with.

Anyway, Daniel, if you're going to go insane like the rest of us, at least you're doing it in style! Great set of knives you have there!

I'm the "Mad Hatter" myself! Nice collection of knives Daniel.

Yeah, I could, and have, gotten by in life just fine with but one or two basic knives. Then I realized how much I like all the variations of blades and covers and such.

Is that sorta like The Troubles, only with fewer explosions? ;)

:D

I'm as affected by the condition as anyone, and it seems to get worse as I get older! And I still don't even think of myself as a collector.

Yeah, it might be, but I had a cat explosion here a little bit ago. That happens with one of them gets startled and the other 4 scramble in all directions heading for cover. They are the most paranoid animals I have ever had the pleasure of sharing my home with. Anyway, the sweetner bowl and cell phone and assorted other stuff got knocked off the cabinet in the ensuing melee. I believe I set them off by wearing my little brown crushable hat into the room and they didn't recognize me. I don't believe a knife was involved in any way, so I may have been experiencing "The Troubles" instead of "The Madness" in this particular case.

You seem to have a pretty serious case of "The Madness" with four traditional knives and 3 of them being customs. Great looking group of knives. BTW, this is NOT the place to come for therapy for "The Madness".

Well lets just see here, 3 customs and a GEC. You certainly didn't start at the shallow end of the pool! ;)

I like the deep end analogy although somewhat understated.
With all due respect though it seems to me that you have jumped in off the rocks and are caught in a powerful rip heading out to sea.
Perhaps there's a 24/7 ocean going knife patrol you could call for assistance.
There's definitely "a hurricane" heading my way if I "do any more swimming in the knife pond" .If you get my drift.:D

Perhaps for some? But you can't open and close and use stamps and then still have them (they're a little worse for any wear, heh), nor enjoy coins quite the same way. At least, that's one of the things I like best about my particular "selection" of knives-- there are many ways to appreciate the craftsmanship and/or design details of each, including: using them for their intended purpose.

I love your cat explosion stories (I still laugh when I recall the one involving Food in the Foyer).

Such drama!

I believe I set them off by wearing my little brown crushable hat into the room...

Does the hat have the same effect on people? That could help narrow it down. ;)

What say.

Thanks for the post, Daniel, and welcome.

I of course agree with the others-- very nice selection of knives!

Indeed, Ms. P., we are all mad here!! I enjoy mine most of the time.

As far as the cat food explosion, it is bound to happen again. Pics when it does...

I seem to be having a GEC explosion here lately what with 8 knives in a month.

As an inveterate collector of things I only need one of, I still seem to have been swallowed hook, line and sinker into the deep end in only a year. First Zippos (and an occasional Zippo related Case), then watches (because of a Zippo watch), and now to knives.

A little over a year ago a SAK did everything I need. So why now do I need every nice looking traditional that I see here?

I know, I love it...:D (maybe it's cause I'm a life long academic? Nah!)

If I remember right you referred to that red Sod Buster in an earlier thread.
It is nice. Good to see it pictured. The others are fine too of course.
