Well, here's my entry for Gabe Newell's "Toast-Cutter" contest. I have to say this was one heck of a challenge but, alot of fun. The U-shaped blade is my own 500 layer HC damascus, multi-edge quenched with a slight convex grind (closer to flat) on the inside and a convex outside grind. The blade and neck both have "broken wave" filework with the blade tips ending in finger grooves (for better cutting, of course). The blade, neck & guard are all from the same billet. I thought originally of splitting a billet and forming the U but, that would have left a slight gap in the blade (at the split) so instead I hot piened the neck into the blade. With this design you can take off three crusts and then just clip off the last crust with the bottom of the blade. One straight motion, no twisting or turning. The handle is a solid warthog tusk with a malachite throat and black spacer. The tang goes half the length of the tusk. The board that goes with it is a nice piece of quilted, curly maple. Tess just needs to put a leather base on the board and then it's finished up. This thing was definately interesting to sharpen and then clean/wax. I hope you like it, I need to go and get another band-aid.
