Well, here's my entry for Gabe Newell's "Toast-Cutter" contest. I have to say this was one heck of a challenge but, alot of fun. The U-shaped blade is my own 500 layer HC damascus, multi-edge quenched with a slight convex grind (closer to flat) on the inside and a convex outside grind. The blade and neck both have "broken wave" filework with the blade tips ending in finger grooves (for better cutting, of course). The blade, neck & guard are all from the same billet. I thought originally of splitting a billet and forming the U but, that would have left a slight gap in the blade (at the split) so instead I hot piened the neck into the blade. With this design you can take off three crusts and then just clip off the last crust with the bottom of the blade. One straight motion, no twisting or turning. The handle is a solid warthog tusk with a malachite throat and black spacer. The tang goes half the length of the tusk. The board that goes with it is a nice piece of quilted, curly maple. Tess just needs to put a leather base on the board and then it's finished up. This thing was definately interesting to sharpen and then clean/wax. I hope you like it, I need to go and get another band-aid.

that is awesome. I love seeing what you folks are putting out there. :)

If I ever get rich, I'm gonna pay you, Bill, and Mark to do all my cooking equipment. :D

You're nuts! You're crazy. That's just wild. All that beautiful work. For what?

Can't you people just make your children eat the crust? You're bigger than they are. Aren't you?

;) ;) ;)

Thanks guys. It would also be handy for blinding an assailant if your ever attacked in the kitchen. :D

I didn't even bother joking with Tess about making a sheath for this one. She would have smacked the tar outta me. :p

Looks great. So you entered that too huh. I HT'd a set of blades for another entry. How's that contest coming along?

Yeah, AGAIN! Seriously, I really like that work,J! You ought be be getting low on tar!

:D Somehow I missed the Mr Toasty contest but this is great, J! :D Some people have too much time on their hands...but use it for great purposes. ;) That's a wonder to behold. But I like the crust!

Dave, I'm pretty sure it is a thread on KnifeForums (CKD). It's crazy but interesting. Only a knife maker could dream something like that up that would attract such interest. For me, I like the crust best of all.

There is some great stuff being made. I joined up late but, there are still a few more to come. I just didn't want to be the last one to finish up plus, I had this idea in my head. Once that happens I've just gotta do it. I'm hoping Coop will be at the show this weekend to take the photo, I know he'll do something great with it.

Looking forward to seeing your cutter in person J. How long a drive for you guys? 4 hrs for me.

I'm looking forward to showing it off too. It's about 5-5 1/2 hrs. for us. We're leaving in the morning, going to White Plains, MD to visit Keith Bagley and his wife for the day (Fri.) and then going up the next morning (Sat.) to the hotel. We're hoping to have enough time to take Danny swimming before the VIP room. Keith is only about an hour south of the show so we should be pretty fresh when we get there. Depending on what he and I get into in his shop, of course. I just built him a gas forge identical to mine. It's his first gas forge. :D He taught me to make damascus using coal and that's all he's ever used. He really liked my forges last time he came up though so this could be interesting. I'm sure there will be a couple good stories. See ya there.

You doing the VIP thing Mark? I forgot to ask.

You guys and all your shows... Makes a grown man weep to think what that must be like! Nothing like getting to see all your buds every few weeks, makes me feel like I'm living in the middle of nowhere - well, DUH! :D

Can't wait to see Coop's pics if he does em J, but frankly yours are no cat pee. Guess I'll wander off to find the original thread, sounds like fun.

Oh, Coop is definately doing the picture for this one. Well, to tell the truth, he's doing them for all the TC knives but, I'd be sending it to him regardless. Any of my good knives go to Coop, he's the man.

I'd love to see you at a show sometime Dave. I think the closest one we do to you is in Ohio but, that won't be until November. Let's start planning now. :D

Ohio... Cripes man that's like 9-10 hours. I'd better start driving now! :D Yeah, when I was younger a day on the road was no big deal but nowadays that sounds like a long drive. Even so, it's not out of the question. Let's start planning now. I have a year so psych myself up. :D

Can't wait to see Coop's pics of your cutter. The other entries rocked too! Cripes, that is cool. Wish I'd been paying better attention, that would have been fun. Mr Toasty is a freakin trip Mark!!! :D :D

Thanks Dave

Cant wait to see what Coop does with it.

It would be fun to do something like this here in shoptalk. maybe not a contest. But maybe a theme type cutting object.
