It's not a knife but...

I finally have my first Spyderco product, a Sharpmaker. After reading the instructions and watching the DVD I tried it on a knife that could barely cut paper. Now it does a decent job of shaving hair. That's with admittedly poor technique and no practice. I can't wait to see the results once I'm actually good at using it.

the sharpmaker is a great product.

gives all of us confidence that we are in fact not sharpening-impaired :)

HINT: don't let the blade tip run off the stones

I had similar results with my Sharpmaker when I got it. Now you just need a bunch of Spyderco knives to go with it.

Thanks. Fortunately I read that a while back. Now the trick is avoiding the occasional slip.

I agree. The next big knife purchase I want to save up for is a PE Manix 2. Though I do have a Byrd Robin.

Speaking of which. In the video Sal said that most Spyderco knives come with close to a 30 degree bevel but a 40 degree micro bevel was recommended for sharpening. Should I assume that a Byrd comes with a 30 degree bevel? And if so would it be wise to put a 40 degree micro bevel on it or is it small enough to stand up to a 30?

Hey Locust. Congrats on getting the Sharpmaker. I have one and am a big fan.

I would assume that a Byrd knife comes with a 30 degree bevel. I'm not a Spyderco expert, mind you. I'm sure Deacon or Josh K would be able to give you a definite answer. What I do know is that the Persistence is made of the same steel as found in the Byrd line and it keeps a 30 degree bevel nicely. I do not see a problem with you sharpening your Byrd at 30 degrees.

Get a decent strop and you're set. The sharpmaker will get you shaving sharp, then the strop will make it sing.;)
