And apparently, this man knows it:

I don't think i have what it takes, to amputate my own toes with a 3" Old Timer, or an axe, machete, kukri or an SMFMBMBOMSMF or whatever it's called.
Ofcourse, i won't know for sure, until i'm in that situation.
Either way, it just goes to show what is possible, if, as the man in the video says, you keep your head, and not panic.

And keep a sharp pocket knife with you.

Keep'em sharp!

I read that article. Sounds like he kept his head and made the best decision he could. I sure don't want to find myself in that situation though. Makes you think twice about going out alone, especially when you're going to be working.

I think I would've waited a bit longer for rescue before I started cutting my toes off.

No doubt, depending on the wether I mioght have been spnding the night there. AT the very least wait till night fall, 30 minutes seems like jumping the gun.

Was there any chance that he could have dug around and beneath his foot and then slid his foot out?

Yea I think I would have waited some more to before doing any cutting.

I'd probably have to be close to death before I'd do it, I like to wait things out to the bitter end before I act drastically..

yeah it is a nice knife, probably almost make you wished you'd left it at home with the 'what if' I only waited a little longer scenario dancing around in your head for the rest of your life....
