It's not you, knife, it's me

A few years back, I purchased a Svord Mini Peasant and found it quite a useful size, carried for a year. Some time later, I decided to re-profile it, because the original blade shape had too much belly or breaking down cardboard and opening boxes. This is what I ended up with.

The knife didn't quite seem the same afterward. It was not quite as sharp as I remembered. This was not my first re-profile so I started to suspect factors other than myself, like maybe the heat treat got fouled, or perhaps the blade is differentially heat treated, and I had reached the soft part. My mind started to go down this rabbit hole, and I came close to tossing this blade in the trash. One more time to the diamond stone, this time with a shallower grind angle. By golly, the edge came back! I do my touch-up on a ceramic rod, and the previous grind was too steep to allow consistent contact.

Occam's razor indicates the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. I do all of this work by hand, so I had been the cause of my own grief. Modding knives sure is fun, and rewarding, though!

I would say you just ended up with much more material behind the edge making the geometry much meatier. It probably could do with some thinning.

Then by putting a steeper angle on the edge bevel, you essentially brought the geometry back closer to where it was before you re-profiled it.

I reckon you are correct. The thing with modding is, you can always keep going until you're satisfied... or do irreparable damage :D

I quite like that simple little knife so I am happy it has a proper edge again.

Looks like you did a great job. :)
