It's Odd

It’s odd. I’ve carried a knife pretty much everyday since about 1975 or so. All different types and brands. Primarily, an Old Timer slip blade, a couple of the old Gerber Pauls (love those knives!), a few Benchmades . . . and recently my three blade CRK “collection!” I don’t really have many knives (maybe 10 or so) and certainly not a “collection!”

I’ve never hesitated to use any knife I had. That’s why I was carrying the knife! But I have two fixed blades that have never cut a single thing! When I stop and think about it . . . I rarely ever really “need” my knife. Honestly, I rarely ever use my EDC knife of the day. If I ever use it it’s just breaking down boxes for the trash. Or maybe cutting some cordage. But I might go a week or two and never actually use my knife for anything at all. But it’s always with me.

The last couple of years I’ve grown to enjoy my CRKs. I love the feel of the knifes. How they feel when I open and close them. I enjoy reading about them, watching videos, etc. but mostly it’s just knowing my knife is with me if I need it. But I rarely ever do. Yea . . . it’s odd.

I have been carrying knives for 57 years, and mine don't get daily use either. It's just good they are there if I do need them. I feel a little naked without them.

I went through a period of time, about 14 years, that I used my knives a lot every day because of my job. Since I changed jobs I don't always use
my knives daily, but if I forget to have one on me when I leave the house, which has only happened a couple times over the years, I feel naked and will
certainly have a need for one that day...

My knives get the most use during hunting and fishing season, and when we are camping...

I grew up in an rural area where carrying a pocket knife was just a part of being a well prepared responsible man. The city has encroached and the knives aren't needed as much but I would be embarrassed not to have it when someone does need one. Both my sisters married city slickers and I've given them both knives on occasion but they never carry them and still ask to borrow mine when a package needs opening, etc. It's shameful!

Shameful hahaha.

I almost always use mine, even if for cleaning a bit of dirt out from under my nail or similar. Some of my Damascus just gets opened to look at. I also use it frequently at lunch as I don't pack a knife in my lunch if I bring leftovers, just a spork.

Lifestyles change and if you are not using a knife much anymore, but still appreciate em, I suggest you consider selling some of your fixed blades etc and pick up some wood inlay 21s with Damascus. Perfect for infrequent use and very beautiful to look at.

I typically will use my pocket knife of-the-day at least a couple of times daily. Gotta have one on me. Almost as often, someone will ask to use my knife - because people near me, know me. :o

I....someone will ask to use my knife...

Have you ever said, No. ?

I have, most of the time I do. I get the strangest looks. Then I say something like, It's not made for doing that.

The last time I let someone use my knife they dropped it. So annoyed.

My EDC large Insingo usually gets some use every day, but not lots of use. However...I also always have two SAKs on me, and those get used often every single day. I carry the Insingo mainly for those occasions where I need a heavier-duty cutting tool than the SAK blades. And because I like it! :). There are lots of uses for the SAK tools that a knife blade would be unsuitable for.

As for lending anybody my knife...uh-uh. Not even one of my SAKs, let alone my CRK. If anyone ever asks (hasn't happened in years), I'll offer to cut whatever it is for them. Years ago, I had people ask to see whatever knife I was carrying and try stupid things with them. Never again.

My Mnandi usually gets used once a day at the office. Other than that, it's hit and miss if my at home EDC CRK gets used.

Not odd to me. I have carried knives and lights for over 25 years. Started with carrying a Spyderco Endura fully serrated and a Surefire 6p back in 1990-ish. (Lots of high-end lights since then) I've had lots of Spydercos, lots of Benchmades, Emersons, GT Autos, lots of Microtechs, and now lots of CRK's. As I get older, I appreciate my CRK's immensely, way beyond any other knives I've ever owned.

They don't always get used, but they always get carried.

I ALWAYS have at least two knives and two lights on me. (Two is one and one is none) I feel naked without them.

I will have days when I don't use my knife at all, and other days when it is used frequently. Wolfe said it great...better to have it just in case!

What is a little strange is how expensive the knives I carry have gotten, for something I am not using all the time. But I enjoy them, and life is short, and getting shorter.

Better to have it and not need it......

Amen to that!

I'm with you on that, I've carried pocket knives for at least 50 years, and you're right, one feels a little naked without them, almost like not wearing under...ahm, socks...yeah, not wearing socks with shoes on.

Have you ever said, No. ?

I almost always say no, mostly if they they say something like "can I use your doohicky that cuts?" Like this last Saturday night at church, that is exactly what a lady said to me; I said, "no I won't let you use my doohicky because you don't know how to cut with it and you are going to cut yourself, and it is called a knife by the way, so let me cut whatever you need cutting"; so she says, "I don't need to cut anything, I just need to get the batteries out of this microphone", oh sister, you need more than a doohicky, you need prayer....even so, I used my knife to take the batteries out, so she had the right idea but she really needed a screw driver, a flat head, or something similar, which I do not carry. I recommended she uses her keys the next time she needs to take those batteries out :)
