This morning I was out back and my neighbor came over to tell me that he heard I had the biggest one in the neighborhood. I proudly told him that I though it was true. He said his wife had told him she had seen it when over at my shop, and he wanted to see it for himself. It took him behind the forge and showed it to him. His eyes bulged out in ammazement....."Good God", he yelled,"You should call the Guinness Book of Records". I told him that I wanted to wait until it got really swollen first.

Not sure what exact species this is, but I believe it is some type of giant puffball fungus. It is not a brain mushroom ( false morel). I found it in a shady spot and re-planted it in a 16" potting saucer. It looks exactly like brain coral.

I am actually considering a very similar way of preserving it. I haven't decided the best way to dry it without it collapsing, but the way I prepared pathology specimens was to desiccating it in high proof alcohol. I would then impregnate the specimen with paraffin, and slice it on the microtome. In this case, once dessicated and then dried, I will "stabilize" it with thin CA resin......lots of it.
