Today I received my first Great Eastern Cutlery knife, and honestly I was underwhelmed. But let me get one thing straight, it's not GEC's fault. Everything is fitted together properly, and it's a high quality knife. But as I handled the GEC Easy Pocket Congress that I received, it just didn't feel the same as my Case. I have yet to really put my finger on what it is. Maybe it's because Case is mainly machine made, and GEC is mainly handmade? I've been carrying the congress around the house, and I quickly realized that it's not going to last long. Maybe I'm just a Case snob? I have been carrying my Peanut for the past 9 months or so, and will definately continue to do so. I think my Peanut has definately become "my" knife, and I'm going to keep it that way. But I'm still going to keep the Congress and don't regret buying it. It just doesn't seem to be my cup of tea.

If you want to keep your place in the peanut clan i may just have to confiscate that GEC from you, you know.... for the good of the clan :D

There is something about the peanut... I don't know if it is just the support it gets here or what, but it's just right. I have even found the peanut to be a very useful little knife in the woods! Sometimes I do consider carrying my stockmans instead but the 301 feels like a monster in my pocket.

I would give it some time. I find knives are like some music albums or drinks. I need to explore them for a bit to see if I adjust or change. A new knife feels weird to me often. Or, sometimes I become enthralled with a certain knife for a bit and then - BAM - I'm carrying and loving another for different reasons.

Don't get me wrong. I have favorites and I can't really imagine not having *MY* knife with me or nearby in a pack (Opinel #9). But, in my pocket. Things change for me. Maybe it's tied to the moon.

I know what you mean. I've been carrying my Case CV yellow peanut for the past couple of days, and I have not felt like I am lacking in the cutting department. I have placed the peanut's main clip blade side by side against some of the larger knives that I would normally carry in my rotation, and surprisingly the blades are very close in length.

The compact size of the peanut lets it disappear in my pocket until I need to use it. When I'm done cutting whatever needs to be cut, it goes back into hiding in my pocket until the next time.

I do admit that I have my moments of wavering, where I feel a need, or a desire, to put another knife in my pocket. I'm not sure if I could ever truly be one of those mythical 'one knife' people. There are a number of patterns that I am very fond of and would like to try out, but the compact simplicity of the peanut for everyday cutting chores is hard to beat.

I think that no matter what happens I will always have a peanut in my pocket.

I think I am one of those one knife people. Everytime I put a knife other than that peanut in my pocket, I feel like something is missing. For a couple of days a few weeks ago I carried around a Sodbuster. It just didn't really work either. The best solution to this is to just carry both...

That's where I ended up.

I have to carry a laptop bag with me for my work. I also have a smaller pouch that I use to carry a PDA and a cell phone. That's with me even in meetings and running around when the laptop bag isn't with me. That's where I carry my second and third knives. I usually have a large 3" bladed locker with me, a smaller more friendly looking knife and a small Leatherman Micra.

It happens. Sometimes superior quality doesn't always mean you will like it better. I have my ten year old Henckels (boker) whittler that I favor over some of my knives that cost WAY more. Why? I have carried and used it more then the rest. I'm used to it and have no complaints. The blades are all so sharp and nicely profiled from years of sharpening. I could go on, but I think my point is sometimes good enough can actually be just right and even make more sense.

Glad to hear you are so content.

Congrats on finding your "one" knife. For me it is my scagel fruitport. Not sure why but it just works for me. It isn't my favorite looking knife but something about it just clicks. I still love to check out other knives though :)

Carl.

Obi Wan Kenobi would approve.

I'm still on the hunt for my "one". It was my Queen Burke small barlow, then it was an older Camillus two blade jack (23?). Now it's back to my SAK again.

I am 100% with you on this. I dipped my toe in the GEC pool due to all the praise on this forum. And yes, they are fantastic knives. But they are not in my pocket right now.
My chestnut bone CV peanut is.
Nothing I own cuts better.
GECs are very pretty knives. Both of my examples arrived completely dull. Could not cut paper without tearing. And yes, they sharpen well, but CV is easier and, with my skill set, I can get it sharper. Combine that with the geometry of the thin razor-like peanut blade and, well...
It's my knife, too.

The Peanut knife was my knife for a long time too, it's all I carried. I figured that little knife could do everything I needed a knife for and when I went hunting I would just strap on a bigger belt knife. I've gone through just about every popular pattern since then and I still enjoy the simplicity of a peanut. Right now though I am packing a #54, a big 4'' pocket knife. I tried leaving it home and I packed a peanut for a few days, then a #65 Ben Hogan then my #71 Bull Nose. Nothing felt right and I switched out EDCs like crazy. It wasn't that the other knives weren't any good, they just aren't my Big Jack.

I'm just comfortable with carrying this knife right now, in a week it may be a peanut or even my old 110.

Life is funny and things change too often to actually get normal, if you have truly found your knife, I envy you.

My "one" is my Case Damascus Peanut.I might have a 112,110,or a SAK on my belt, but my Peanut always rides along in my pocket.I've been carrying it daily for 11 months.:)

It's interesting to me how we choose a knife, or how it just seems to get chosen.

So many variables in the equation. No telling what will make someone choose to stay with a knife... or keep jumping to another one. Or have a 13 knife rotation that seems to have a starting roster that changes like that of a pro baseball team facing a trading deadline. :p

Well, I just own one GEC right now (my second is since one month on the way  ) and I own a couple of Case´s even one Peanut.

I personally would prefer having more GECs. To me the #66 Serpentine Jack feels so good in hand.

No doubt, the Peanut is a great little knife. But my GEC feels much better than anything else, I ever had in hands.

Kind regards
Andi
