It's that time again: I'm getting a new knife

So I've been carrying a RSK Mini-Grip for the past two years. I've loved it. The steel was great, the axis lock system is a favorite of mine, and the size was perfect for me. I loved the blade shape as well. The handle material was good but not outstanding. Overall, it's probably my favorite knife and one of my first "good" knives.

However, I broke the tip. It's still functional and I still carry it daily...but my girlfriend has decided to purchase me a new knife for Christmas. So, I'm looking.

It doesn't have to be Benchmade but I do want high quality steel(the Ritter grips come in S30V), roughly the size of a mini-grip.

I'm interested in the Benchmade Mini-Warn. I understand it's essentially a Barrage with G10 scales, a different colored backspacer, D2 steel, and a tanto. How is the Auto-Axis? I don't have a problem flipping the normal Axis around...can even close it with a flick of the wrist...not that that's necessary in my knife.

Seems like an interesting knife to try. Anyone have any knowledge on it?

I was also looking at the Benchmade MPR and, as always, Chris Reeve folders...love the Mnandi. Though, I do work with the knife everyday and that might be a touch out of the price range. Not that she wouldn't buy it...hell, if I really wanted she'd drop $500 on this probably. EDIT: Actually, she said "I want you to get what you want," and then proceeded to jot down the Reeve's website, the knife, and the options I was looking at. I don't want her to do that though. She's a broke college student after all.

Any suggestions?

How is D2 steel BTW? Never had a blade that used it. I understand sharpening it is...interesting. How's it compare to S30V or CPM 154? Also, I understand it's not as corrosion resistant as many steels. I manage a store that has a greenhouse...and I'm very active in that greenhouse. It's also Louisiana so humidity is always high. How would D2 handle that? I assume it wouldn't be an issue at all with a little general care.

Are you against Spyderco knives? I had a full sized Griptillian which I carried for a year but never liked it as much as the Delica.

Not at all. I'm open to pretty much anything as long as it's quality and is about the size I mentioned.

I'd say the Delica, Sages and Caly's are all around the size of the Mini Grip and IMHO all better knives. I understand some will prefer the Axis lock over the liner or back locks but I've had all three and would take any of those Spydercos over the Griptillians any day. They're thinner to carry and more ergonomic to use and that's just the beginning. Just my opinion of course.

If you are in New Orleans, there is a knife shop called Alpines. They are a little pricey, but they have a good selection of benchmades, spyderco, and many other companies. You could take a look at some models up close. I really love my spyderco sage 2. Its close in size to what you describe.

If you want to stick with S30V around 3" blade length, there are Spyderco Native and Buck Vantage Pro.
