It's tough to get a cheap stripper to work hard.

So i got inspired by all the stripping going on. and i don't mean all the stripping going on in moosez manboobporn shaving contest.

I decided to take it to my BK9.

One blade, don't need lots of extra stripper lying around in a container afterwards, so my brilliant idea: small can of spray-on stripper.

pants off, and ready for the stripper to go to work (who doesn't take their pants off when the stripper shows up?):

looking good so far, approx. 1 minute into the project:

but as it turns out, i am an idiot. for not getting the full can o' liquid stripper. because spray on strippers do not agree with Becker BK9 coatings. 15 minutes my left nut. it didn't touch it. so i reapplied and overnight soaked, and that got me a start. on the one side. scraped the bejeezus out of it the next morning and got about 1/3 of the coating off. so i did it again. soaked all day. and scraped again. still on side 1. finally switched to side 2. coated it and let it sit overnight again. and scraped. and coated it with stripper again. and let it sit again. and scraped some more. and got steel wool to try and work the coating off. and then got a sandpaper wheel that could attach to my drill and worked on it with that for a while.

AAAANNNNDDDDD, 3 days, 5 stripper coatings/soaks/scrapings, 2 plastic scrapers destroyed, several hours worth of scraping, and more curse words than i've spit out in the last 10 years later, a rough start:

anyone else have cats that are just fascinated with your knives? Because Biscuit the cat is drawn to knives like a fat kid to an ice cream truck. she can't stay away:

threw the handles back on to get an idea of how it would look. got some stainless steel screws to match the blade. you can't see 'em, but it also has yellow liners from Flexx:

and here's where we are now. trying to decide if i want to polish it more, or put a patina on it. i'll keep everyone posted:

Very nice looking!
Does the steel on the 9 rust easily? Is that why you would force a pantone on it?
Thanks.

So I guess my question would be is there a different coating on the knives per model number? I used the exact same product on my BK11. 1st coat went for 10-15 minutes and took most of it off. Then put on another coat for 10 minutes and it was gone with very minimal work with a plastic putty knife.

Ive found that if you give a cheap stripper a $20 she will work a lot harder..............

I just used some gel citrus strip on my bk7 on Friday night and I had to coat/scrap three times to get all the paint off. I think each time I let the stripper work for 45 mins and I also used a good metal scraper. The scraper really made a difference in how the paint came off once I started using it. I also sanded it a bit and put a patina on it with warm vinegar and it turned out great. I was going to start a thread later today about the stripping and patina that I did to my bk7 and my bk2, but I have to patina the bk2 still.

If you want a 15 minute stripper, Jasco Epoxy Paint stripper is the one. Its what I use and when they say 15 minutes, they mean 15 minutes. Of course, what every gets hit with the over spray, is dead. Grass, Biscuit the Cat, squirrels, and the like.

I've used it for over a year now, and its the real deal. And for $7 a can, what's not to like.

I used "dads easy spray paint and varnish remover" and it really worked. Used it on my 9 and a few old corroded mags with thick crappy paint. Fast stuff. Kinda pricy bout 14.00 a can but it's a big can.

I love cheap strippers!!!!!

But for stripping paint off knives I like to get the more expensive ones. :D

I think that's the same stuff I used on my bk2.. It worked great for me...It removed every bit of the finish in less than 30 minutes.

I've also had good luck with Aircraft Stripper.. You can find that stuff at your local auto parts store.

That's so funny. The title of the thread made me think "Shouldn't this be in the Pirate's Cove forum?"

anyway, nice work. Remember to keep a light coat of oil on her, or she will bite you.

You used the right brand of stripper, just not exactly the right product from that brand. Jasco paint and epoxy is good, Jasco Speedomatic, dad's is good, Krud Kutter and Kleen Strip are all good. The stuff in the quarts and gallons has a higher concentrate of methylene chloride than the spray does.

i'll remember those brands for next time, thanks.

do the metal scrapers ding up the blade if you use them? b/c i (foolishly?) followed the directions and used plastic scrapers only. are metal scrapers ok to use? i bet that would have helped a lot. but the coating certainly didn't come off in a gentle wave of black, regardless. i had to muscle it off.

spent some time sanding today, looking better, but photobucket is fighting with me and not letting me load pics from my computer. i'll post up the progress later tonight or maybe tomorrow.
