The latest revision of iTunes will not run on all Windows computers. There have been a number of failures, including one on my main machine running Windows XP Pro. It appears to download correctly. But, when you try to run it, it will not run and gives error messages.

Searching Apple for the error message leads you to an instruction to reload part of your Windows operating system. This does not work.

You have to completely remove all Apple programs from your computer, then reload iTunes. Instructions for completely removing iTunes are here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925

You need those instructions, else you miss some items.
(specifically, C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\)
After you completely remove iTunes, you can download the latest version and it will run fine.

Back up your music files first, although when I removed iTunes, my music files remained behind. Still good to have a safety backup.

I had the same issue with iTunes and just used Windows System Restore to roll back my computer to the state it was before I attempted the update. I'll update iTunes again if they get around to fixing the bugs.

Had this problem with the iTunes update last week. iTunes wouldn't load so I couldn't sync my iPhone. After much Googling I did the same as you mentioned and deleted all iTunes related software and then a fresh iTunes install and it's been working fine since then. Good FYI thread though.
