I've been bitten by the spyder

Made my first ever spydie purchase last week, dropped down $60 at southwest gun and knife on a SS Endura PE. I'm officially hooked. It's nice and heavy and just fits my hand like it was made for me. I noticed after I bought it that it was AUS6. That's a first for me, most every knife I've owned before was either 440 or 420, or that good ole classic mystery metal "stainless, china".

Seems like a good steel. This being my first experiance with it, gets wicked sharp but looses it's edge fairly quick. I'm not an expert sharpener, but I can get it back to shaving with an arkansas stone in no time at all.

Did some reading and found that the FRN handled models use VG10 for the pointy end, quickly ran back to the store and picked up a FRN Delica PE for about $55. Oh wow, what a blade, been using it for about three days and haven't had to touch the edge with a stone yet, that bugger knows what sharp is and likes to stay there.

Seriously considering going back to get the Endura FRN PE model now. Wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a SS Endura PE with a VG10 blade, hopefully it's forthcoming?

Sal, first time I saw a Spydie was about 10 yrs ago, friend of mine had one at work, didn't get to play with it but got a good look at it, my first impression was UGHLY. (intentionally misspelled) Always remembered that humpback with the hole in it, now I understand your "form follows function" idea, glad I took a chance and bought one. I'm hooked, no looking back, I intend to keep on getting them.

As impressive as the SS Endura was, it was the VG10 blade on the FRN Delica that shook me up, never had a knife that sharp that just wouldn't loose it's edge.

You have now been poisoned and are doomed to spend the rest of your life and most of your money buying Spyderco knives .......

Congrats on getting bitten ;)

VG10 is one of my favorite steels. Gets very sharp, easy to keep sharp, and stays sharp for a long time. The only steel I like better is O1.

But it's a pleasent kind of "doomed" :D My first reaction was the same, Ugly knife, never own one.

Well after the first Spyderco purchase (Chinook I) it was all over. While I'm not a collector, Spydies have that special something that keeps me coming back for more time and time again.

Once you own a Spydie it's all over . . .

Hiya, sunrunner! Welcome to the wonderful world of knives that are worth a damn. Regarding a VG-10 Endura with SS handles, I'm afraid it's not likely. The reason? It's called the Police model. I love mine. It's like a reeeaaally pointy straight razor. It doesn't have as much belly as the Endura (this was a strong selling point for me.) You can snag one off ebay in the $50-$75 (more or less.) I'd highly reccomend it.

I bought an Endura as a beater simply because I considered the knife's look to be the result of a bored designer. Now, the Enduras have multiplied and live in boxes with a lot of its Spyderco relatives. That's what happened when I got 'bitten.' It's a sickness that will stick around for a while. You're done. Enjoy. :)

Be careful that you don't literally get bitten by a Spyder. Them buggers come sharp.

sunrunner,

There is no antivenom.... just manage the bite by often taking your wallet out and buying more Spyders...

Gaj, Spydies are extremely well priced and one can afford many without doing too much damage to the Visa card - not like those Sabenza's and Striders. ;)

sunrunner - the FRN Endura in VG10 is a great knife - lightweight, strong, will stay sharp and easy to sharpen. It's one of the best large "value for money" folding knives going around.

Sunrunner,
Wait till you put a Native III in your hand. It has got to be the most comfortable knife you could ever hold. (men with large hands may object). Try giving it to a non-knife person closed, even they recognize the comfort. Now I'm seriously hooked on Spyderco's. Manix last buy, Chinook next buy.

Update, went back and purchased an Endura with FRN and VG-10. Placed an order for the Millie and a Kiwi. Ack, this stuff is starting to cost money.

Stopped off to visit my dad at work and showed the Endura to him, he was mighty impressed, he's one of those people who has hunted all his life and has never paid more than $20 for a knife. Ended up giving him the Delica (heh, he's hooked now). Sad that he's over 50 and has spent thousands of dollars on good hunting rifles and has never owned anything bigger or badder than a Buck 110. I explained the term super steel to him and warned him not to play around with the blade too much as it was sharper than most of his razors. Told him to EDC the knife for a while and see how much he liked it, and if he enjoyed it he could see a nicer one for his birthday and / or christmas.

Is it my imagination or are the Enduras ground differently? The SS Endura has a noticable hollow grind yet the FRN one almost appears to be a flat grind.

I've looked at the Native III, doesn't seem to catch my interest. But I must admit the Stretch and the Spyderfly are making my hands itch and my wallet heat up.

Go get that endura. It was my first spyderco cause for years I never really paid attention. One day, I needed a new knife and all they had were spydercos. So I said hell, I need a new knife NOW and picked up an endura. Form follows function indeed. Than I had to get another one, then another.....and than a few weeks ago I needed a knife for a specfic purpose....so I had to get another.

And now I keep feeling the need for a chinook II..
