They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, yet almost everybody gets really pissed off when someone copies their knife design. In most cases, it's someone trying to pass off the knockoff as the real McCoy and that is certainly a crappy thing to do...
(you'll actually see some knifemakers even on this bladeforums who blatantly rip off other people's designs or change them just enough to avoid that "you're ripping off so-n-so's stuff" confrontation. I'm not going to name any names but it's pretty shitty. Get your own style already. Time to move on and stop completely jacking someone else's swagger and knife style. It's great that in the beginning of your knifemaking you wanted to take inspiration from a great knifemaker who did the type of handles and designs you love, but if you never come up with your own style, you're always just a wannabe. I mean come on. I apprenticed under the guy and even I managed to develop my own deal. I wonder if the person I'm talking about knows I'm talking about them. We'll see if I get any PM's.)
The rest of the time, it's someone just taking inspiration from your work and producing their own take on it. In this case, as long as they're not trying to build a career on it, i think that's perfectly cool.
I hate to admit it, but I've always been kind of jealous of the awesome knifemakers who find out that someone in another country has ripped off their designs. I know it can be a headache and bullshit, but still. That's like the first time you get upset that the fans at your concert just ripped all your clothes while you're trying to get to your car. Inconvenient, but definitely let's you know you've become a somebody.
It finally happened to me! YAY!!!!!
I do searches all the time to make sure that I'm not copying someone else's knife name or method name, etc. I also search to make sure that nobody is upset with their Fletcher knife and talking about it on another board where I won't be able to see it and rectify the situation. Today I found this:

Now I can't read what any of this stuff says, but it looks like this guy /or people copy popular knife designs with whatever they have available to the best of their ability. They don't try to pass off their version as the real deal, so I don't take any offense to it at all and I don't think anyone should. I actually really dig a lot of the stuff i see on this website and I wish I could purchase some of this stuff, not because I want the real thing and just don't want to fork over the money, but because I like this guys rustic, village style version and look at it as it's own knife, not a ripoff. So check this stuff out. Pretty interesting. By the way, if anyone speaks Thai, I'd like to know what all this says.
