I've been trying for ages to find something like this!

We all love Bic lighters but hate that we can't refill them. We all love Zippos but hate that the fuel evaporates. And Zippo Blu lighters are expensive and have reliability problems. I've been scouring the net for a long time trying to find a flint ignition candle flame refillable butane lighter. And here's the answer! Pretty slick rig that just drops into a regular zippo case.

I've got the z-plus version that's a jet flame. I've carried it daily for like 2 years now. No problems. works everytime. I give it 2 thumbs up.

My Thunderbird butane/flint lighter arrived this morning. My Z-plus is still working just fine after 3 or 4 years of semi-regular use, but I just don't trust the piezo ignition for outdoor use. The Thunderbird might just become my main outdoor lighter (with a bic or two for backup.) Thanks for bringing these to my attention!

Don't forget to post pics! :D

Seriously??? You didn't get one of these yourself yet??? I foolishly assumed that your original post was an endorsement.

FWIW...after having owned one for less than half a day— it works great! It took me a little time to figure it out, but closing the Zippo lid is what stops the flow of butane, thus extinguishing the flame. If you simply blow out the flame, the butane continues to flow.

I just held a Bic and the Thunderbird side by side and then moderately blew on the two flames at once. The Bic went out. The Thunderbird did not. It may not be "windproof," but its certainly better than a Bic.

I'll be getting one soon--a Knipex pliers wrench was first on the list. :D

I'm not a big fan of disposable gear either. That's why I have a love hate thing going with my mora. Why is it that disposable gear works better then expensive gear? I may have to pick this up.

I'm not sure it's a big deal, but...

As mentioned, it is the opening and closing of the Zippo lid that respectively starts and stops the flow of butane. As such, you probably should hit the flint wheel as soon as you open the lid. I intentionally opened the lid, counted to five, and then hit the flint. The ball of flame was enough to cover my thumb. I felt it, but nothing even close to uncomfortable.

I have one of those and tested it here at sea level and it worked great but when I took it on a trip to the Sierras +10,000 ft elev it didn't work for shit. Good thing I had my other fire making stuff and my friends Bic worked perfectly.

That is pretty damn sweet. Now you've got me thinking I need to drag out my old zippo and get one of those inserts. Thanks for posting that.

Yeah that's why I wanted a flint/candle flame version. Torches and piezos are just too unreliable in my experience, regardless of how much you pay for it.

Just got mine today. It's even more awesome than I had hoped! Time will tell its durability, but it seems very ruggedly built. The fun thing is that "normal" height flames are achieved when it's adjusted just shy of the lowest setting. It was set in the middle when I got it, and when I flicked it on for the first time a 6" flame erupted out of it!:D:D:D:thumbup:

Man, I need to get one of these. No reason your gear can't be functional and stylish (like a nice .357 revolver...) I can resurrect some of my old Zippos. I have always like the dimensions of the Zippo lighter - fits perfectly in the "5th pocket."

Yeah I've got it in a solid brass "armor" zippo case right now. :D:thumbup:
