My first knives were the two pictured: a Cub Scout knife and the Ulster Scout knife. Following the Scout pattern I went through a stockman phase.

Almost 50 years later, after going through a variety of knives, including quite a few one-handed openers, Spyderco, Benchmade etc., I've come back to the Scout pattern. I love my Vic Farmer and will order a Remington R 4.

Has anyone else come back to where they started?

Never fell out of grace. The Ulster Scout knife was my first and still have that same knife 51 years later. :D

My first knife is an Ulster Boy Scout Knife. Used it for seventeen years. I retired it because the main blade had become so loose, it would not stay open any longer.

Now, I have a Queen Scout knife. I am very happy with it. I expect to add some more to my collection.

Pretty much, yes. My first knife was a Vic classic at the age of 6, bought in Switzerland.. My first "real" knife at about the age of 8 was a Swisschamp or something along those lines, both of which have long since been lost... I got a Fisherman as a gift that I carried for a very long time through my teenage years ~ lost it my grandma's couch... She found and mailed to me 2,000 miles away, after moving across the country (isn't engraving great?!?) ~ I still have that one :)

Today I've got a pioneer in my pocket, and I usually have a Bantam in my back pocket to complement whatever prettier traditional I'm carrying. Can't beat a SAK!

I followed the same path. My first knife was a scout. Years of stockmans followed, and then a ton of tactical folders when I found Bladeforums. Then a big change began when my daughter was born. I wanted to carry knives that my daughter could look back on, and admire. So I started carrying standard SAKs, then an alox Pioneer, and finally now back to a traditional scout again. Full circle!!

Had the old blue scout knife. Now I have quite a few scouts, various brands, SAK's, etc. Hard to beat.

And one could definitely argue that the cub scout knife is the superior pattern. It doesn't have a can opener, but that limb is really just vestigial in this century. The cub scout is smaller, lighter, has a half stop on the main blade, and has locks for both the cap lifter and awl. I'd love to see somebody remake the cub scout with something nicer than blue delrin.

My first knife was an Ulster scout, too, and it's still going strong.

And coming full circle, I added this Weidmannsheil scout to the accumulation a couple months ago.

Thanks for your replies. After reading about Scout knives lately, I started looking for my Ulster and couldn't find it. I became obsessed with the fact that it was missing; fortunately my wife found it and I now carry it a couple of days a week.

I love the build quality of the Ulster, but wish it had a saw. I enjoy carrying my Farmer and Trekker also.

I really have too, my very first knife was a OT medium stockman. After that I went solely to tactical folders for the next 15yrs or so. Like many here, I've since found blade forums and come full circle back to slipjoints. Scout knives are genuinely one of my favorites!

Here's some pics of my three favorite scouts:D

As an update - I just received my Remington R 4 and couldn't be happier. As of today, it may be my favorite knife.

Beautiful bone on that middle Ulster!

I went through numerous knives in my youth and settled on the two-blade jack/barlow with a clip main at around the age of 10 - 12. Forty years ( and a pile of knives later ) and you'll most likely find a two-blade jack/barlow with a clip main in my pocket. I may stray now and then to something with a straight edge or spear point, but the clip/pen combo is what I have always come back to.

The Cub Scout knife is a nice pattern. Still have mine that my dad passed down to me. Every time I see it, it brings back fond memories of my days in scouting. Got my Eagle in 1989. Thanks to all for posting!

The first knife I owned was an old fixed blade my dad had fashioned from an old file latter my grandfather paid me for doing some work for him with a brand new Barlow. Since that time I got hooked on modern folders, then mid-techs then customs now I'm back to Barlows, Trappers and so on. I think this is a journey that a lot of knife lovers take.

My first knife was the blue Cub Scout Knife. That was about 46 years ago...I wish I still had that one. Was that Cub Scout Knife also made by Ulster or Camillus?
