For those that have written on my post yesterday, (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=715055), thankyou. The best advice that I had received was about creating a burr and pushing it onto the otherside. I took that advice and made sure that I was getting a burr. Before yesterday I could never get a burr and would always run my thumb like you guys say and have to question if it was a burr or not (yeah I could get it shaving sharp but not whittling). The problem was that I never developed a straight relief due to inconsistent angles. Even yesterday I had probems trying to create a burr for an hour because I was profiling with an 800 grit stone that took forever. So I went to the hardware store and got me a coarse arkansas stone and created a noticable burr pretty quickly. Then I created a burr on the otherside and worked with less pressure. Then I moved to the 800, 2000, 6000, and 15,000 creating a burr on both sides of the edge and noticed that when your at the fine stage level it doesn't take much pressure at all to get the burr moving to the otherside.

Thanks alot again :)

cool, it's always great when you suddenly get the golden tip / see the light. congrats!

Thanks guys. Sharpening is addicting and fun too. I'm just glad I finally was able to do it because I've been working at it for a long time, and I finally saw the light (FINALLY awwh).

I think not useing and doing enough on a coarse stone is a very common problem. The coarse hone in my opinion is the most important hone in any sharpening kit.

Glad you are hooked, but view this as a beginning and not an end.

Now you can set new challenges:
How many times can you split a hair?
Can you simply drag the hair over the blade and it splits/cuts from its own weight?
Can you wave the knife around and see streaks of fire emitting from the oxygen atoms being split?

There are plenty of challenges ahead for you my friend. Enjoy the fun!
