Tell me about bones guys...

Other than size what's the difference between cow bone and Giraffe bone. Is one more easily worked than the other? Is Giraffe denser?
I've never seen giraffe bone scrimmed...can it be done?
What about american bison or even water buffalo? They both should have a dense bone and should be available, why aren't they used?
Pick a question...any question and run with it. I'v got a million of em.

I don't thaink that there is much difference in the densities, bone is bone, and stinks when ground! Almost any kind of smooth bone can be scrimmed as long as it is finely finished and is polished. I have seen black buffalo horn scrimmed with white ink, it looks cool compared to the traditional white with black ink. It is available form most of the knife supply houses, and also is available in red from some suppliers.

In the chat room the other night we were discussing the possibility of a very dedicated knife maker willing their leg bones, and maybe anything else usable, to another knife maker to be used for handles. Now that would definitely be a rare knife.

Yes bone is bone, but some are denser than others. The main difference between a giraffe leg bone and a cow leg bone is the thickness and the fact that the bones of the giraffe are somewhat longer.Cow bone doesn't give out real big handle scales.I would like to see how big a bison bone is,the main problem with these bones is where to get them.If you go and hunt them they are available all over if the animals are popular in your area.I got some ostrich leg bone and it works great. You just have to pick the bones that work best and use them.I would like to find some camel leg bones,I figure that they would be a good size, but they aren't around here so I can't find any.I do use allot of deer and wild pig and domestic cow.Just start asking around with anybody you know that has cows hoarses or any kind of livestock and see if they know where anybody hauls off the dead animals at and then get permission to scavenge the bone pile.Since Stag is getting so hard to find,The bones will be the next great handle material and if you can find something new that works great you could make a fortune with them.

Michael, Michael, Michael!

I feel like I am being baited! A knifemaker's legbone? The anatomy of a walrus wasn't brought up, was it?

You know C.L.........I wasn't going to ask but Michael said:
maybe anything else usable,

I started thinking about Walrus parts myself???:o  :o

Don't they use those things for knife handles in India?

I don't know about India but my grandfather had a cane made from one from a bull!

This has gone down hill in a hurry!

I feel that some bone or parts are not being harvested from animals in a proper way, poaching. Being an avid animal lover, I have refrained from using questionable animals bones or from certain purveyors of these animal products. I feel if we can remove the market, this will slow down the poaching. Thia is just my way and I am not suggesting anyone else should do the same, but isn't there some big issues here?

First lets see here,Human bones have been used before in ancient times as ritual knives..
As for the harvesting of animal parts...We cannot any longer use African elephant ivory due to poaching and thus it is no longer available.
The mastodon ivory has been extinct for a few million years and thus cannot be poached. They are found and used..
The Walrus "oosic is fossilized and found by the eskimos and not taken from the walrus unless legally taken which they are the only ones that can sell the parts and so no poaching the walrus Ivory is also the same way..
As for the Stag,India stag was legally harvested sheds in there country and thus no poaching, now there government has stopped the export of the stag and we are running out.As for domestic game, some parts are legal and some arent,Most of what you see being used are traded from legal hunters or found sheds..
As for the cow bones these are farm raised for food and the bones are completely legal to use.
The giraffe bones are legally picked up and sold from africa and not poached, the certificate that comes with it says that it is from animals that had been killed by other animals and then the bones picked up and used and thus not wasted at all.
So as for the comment that not using natural materials would stop the poaching and unjustified killing of animals,I don't think this is the problem and wouldn't stop nothing..It is the greedy people that think they have to brag about how many or how big and don't hunt for the meat and kill anything in site. There is no reason not to hunt a trophy as long as you use what you kill.Like a couple of deer will last a family most all winter or a elk or moose will feed a family all winter, things like thatbut as for the handle material we are using no it won't stop poaching or over killing to get our handles because 99% of it is found or legally harvested and not hurting iur environment..
Guess I should get off my soap box:)

I sell a lot of pre historic bison bone and it is to thin except for small folders.Mammoth leg bone makes nice scales. It can be a lot of different shades of brown.I do not think anyone is killing rare animals for thier bones .Most of it is being picked up after the animal is killed or dies for other reasons.

alright so are we gonna use knife maker leg bone. or just plain human leg bone? :barf: :D any volenteer's?:p

Sorry but I already have it set that I am to be cremated when I die,With the understanding that the ashes are to be taken and part of them used in the flux of a Damascus billet and made into a knife blade then the rest placed in a urn with donna as she doesn't like the idea of being cremated but wanted me buried with her..
I figured this way I could have some of my spirit in a final blade.
