Long story short oldschool meerkat was left in the rain, and now has rusty innards. (where the scales slide)

I've got no clue in how to take it apart, nor any clue in treating rust. :( Any MeerKat experts around here?

I've tried to figure out a way to safely take apart my MeerKat and haven't figured out one yet, if I were you I would just send it in to Spyderco and see how much it would cost to get it treated by them. Most threads and forums I've seen advise against taking apart pinned knives unless you have a lot of experience in pinned knives and a good shop.

Or you could alternatively send it to me and I'll take it off your hands :P

Any tips with Spyderco's servicing? Price range? Time? Anything would be helpful!

a little surface rust on the liners won't hurt anything. so it just depends if it bugs you that much to see.

you could fold up some sandpaper and work the liners a bit to get the bigger flakes off. spray it out Ruth some wd 40 and good to go.

I sent in my Jester to Spyderco because I noticed rust on the Liners and Screws, and after a few emails with Charlynn, I sent it in. After around 3-4 weeks, I got a package back from Spyderco with my Jester in it and the rust gone. I don't think they figured out what had happened, and just recommended I keep it oiled which I do now. Price range, I can't help you with that as I don't think it would be covered under warranty and might depend on how much rust/how bad it is/if it even is salvageable.

One thing I have seen though, with pinned knives is if you are willing to have replacement scales made with screws instead of pins, it is possible to just pry it apart, take the pins out and replace them with screws when you are putting it back together, but this would definitely void warranty.

Flitz on a small cue tip should work.

If you don't mind paying for return shipping, toss me a PM or visitor message and I bet I could have that thing cleaned up in no time.

(knife tinkerer on the side - don't worry - you won't get the knife back in 13 different pieces:))

Just email them with pics to see if you can get a quote, I wouldn't recommend taking it apart either.
