my girl is buying me a g10 xl espada in a week or 2 as my new "bbq" knife. she's more excited about this thing than i am. she's weird, but she's a keeper i know. lol

anyway here's the idea and where i need help from you guys that know more about knives than i do. since this is going to be a fancy show off type knife and not a real user i want to dress it up really nice. the first step i want to take is replacing the g10 with full stag or bone scales, even if there has to be some sort of filler material if i can't get big enough 1 piece scales. beyond that i'm thinking of file work down the spine of the blade or something.

i doubt there;s anybody out there right now offering premade replacement slabs for the espada line so where should i start looking to get this done? custom makers, somebody here on the forum, or are there companies that specialize in this sort of thing?

and before anybody asks "why waste all that money on a production knife when the same amount will get you a handmade custom?" the answer to that is easy, because i want to and i can. lol

Why not get a regular xl espada?

because i'm not crazy about the high poilish blade, and this project is already going to cost me an arm and a leg with the 135$ base price so the 300$ regular espada would just be silly since i'm just going to change out all the bling parts that make it cost extra in the first place.

True, but think of all the file work & etching that could be done on the bolsters. And those bolsters would set off the stag real nice. The blade, lock bar, & clip could be decoratively filed too.

if it is gonna be your bbq knife, your gonna want those G10 scales. Blood makes things like polished bone and stag very slippery! Even wood is quite a bit more slippery then one would think when you get blood and fat on it!

that's true but with the xl espada even if your hand slips there's like 9 foot of handle before your hand ever gets near the blade. lol

Why not save cash & dress up a 6' Ti-Lite? You could do it up like a fancy Italian stiletto for much less.

A lot of the strength of the design comes from the G10. If you want to do as you suggest, I'd recommend buying some slabs of raw (jade, though the suppliers don't call it jade) G10 of the appropriate thickness from Mcmaster Carr or another supplier, and making that into a pair of gorgeous custom scales.
