I was gifted with a Surefire G2 in LED. I like it. So... what's the next step from this flashlight? In a reasonable price range. Fenix? Others?

Thanks.

If you like the Surefire's checkout the 6P, 9P, LX2, E1B, etc. All a more expensive then the G2, but with benefits of their own.

If you'd rather not spend the coin, checkout Fenix's lineup. Better yet, ask the guys over at CPF.

The next step... is to upgrade it.

Get a Malkoff M61 from MalkoffDevices.com

~300 lumens for 2 hours.

$59.

4sevens Quark is another great choice, relatively inexpensive and excellent, well made and designed lights.

I love my G2L. I've also got a 9P with both 90 & 91 lamp assembilies. I have an E1b which I can't seem to find right now. I bought my dad a 6P and my mom a G2. The runtimes on the incandescents kinda suck. LED is definitley the way to go. And I prefer the plastics to the metal models even though they are less $$. Seems like the plastic will give my other gear less of a beating like scratches and such. I actually prefer the plastic bezel on my mom's light to the metal bezel on my G2L. Something about the heat sink or something and, honestly, I don't even know what heat sink means. I'm not a complete flashlight nut like some on the CPF. However, I think that the upgrade mentioned above would be a great next step. 300 lumens for 2 hrs sounds good to me. Enjoy your light. -DT

It really depends on what you want out of your next light. I carry a E1L w/E1B clip, for me it's the perfect EDC light. I would suggest a nice two-stage Surefire like an E1L, E2L, or a lumamax series light.

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

I like all the ideas. A mod? Sure. But, at $59 I can get a Fenix (from 260 at 1.5hrs to 10 at 12 hrs) that will run in 4 different modes. :D I think I like the idea of having a more power output choices more than modding a whole light - I actually like to keep things stock. At the same time, would a flashlight that has (more) output options translate to one that's less reliable? More things to go wrong. Switch being more complicated hence less robust. What's you guys think on that?

My favorite and most used light is the Photon Microlight II I carry on my keychain - a very powerful little light. I also had the 1st gen. Inova X1 - cap finally failed.

What I want out of the next is just more power and the ability to switch between low and very high output settings. Something that's reliable and I can rely on not to fail. Something that can be beat up when out and about.

Thanks.

Carrot, XP-G malkoff's out? looks like its time for some new malkoff's :) :)

They aren't officially out, but the first production batch is trickling out to those who cajole Mr. Malkoff enough. I pestered him ALL WEEK at SHOT Show to get this baby...

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

The Malkoff M61 is not a mod, it is a replacement light engine. You simply unscrew the bezel end of the flashlight, the P60L (Surefire's LED light engine) falls out, you put the M61 in, and you've got 4x the brightness. Easier than swapping the bulb on a Maglite. Speaking of which... Mr. Malkoff also sells upgrades for those...

But if you really want a second light (I'd rather have the Malkoff M61 than any other light... even another Surefire to be honest) you should check out the 4sevens Quark Turbo 123. 230 lumens for 1.8 hours and 30 days of continuous output on its lowest setting. It is programmable, so you can set your two favorite levels to be instantly accessible at the twist of a head. $75 bucks and a tough little bugger with a 10 year warranty, which will give your Surefire a run for the money.

However, and I'll just save you time now, once you play with the Quark Turbo 123 you're going to want to upgrade to the Malkoff M61 so you might as well snag one as well.
