I saw a great thread that really caught my attention, by Excalibur http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/001451.html
Now this wasnt the first time I had heard of Daniel Winkler, Ive admired his work for sometime, and had the chance to handle his knives at shows that Ive been too. I would love to own one of his pieces, but its just not in the budget right now.
As chance would have it, that same week I became aware of another maker on Chat by the name of Max. When I found out he was a maker I asked to see some of his work, and he was kind enough to let me see some of his knives (Ogg Custom Knives). Now Max described his knives as not too pretty users, but I found them fascinating. It wasnt too long before I put two and two together and asked Max if he would be interested in making a knife for me? He said, Sure! I sent over to Max a picture of Daniel Winklers #18 Bowie, along with Excaliburs thread. He liked the idea, in fact that was a direction (period pieces) he was looking to get into. Being someone that feels a picture is worth 1000 words, I started doing some photo illustrations of what I thought the knife might look like.
Now, Daniel Winkler is an ABS Mastersmith and his #18 Bowie is Damascus with a beautiful period sheath by Karen Shook. I have never touched one of Maxs knives, hes just getting into making his own Damascus, and though he makes sheaths there is no way he wanted to attempt trying to match Karens work. We decided that a forged blade would be more accurate for a period knife and that the sheath would have to wait. I didnt bother to find out how much Daniels knife cost or how long his wait is. I have a maker that I know will do a great job, at a price I can afford, and I will probably have the knife within the month. What more could I ask for?
