I saw a great thread that really caught my attention, by Excalibur http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/001451.html
Now this wasn’t the first time I had heard of Daniel Winkler, I’ve admired his work for sometime, and had the chance to handle his knives at shows that I’ve been too. I would love to own one of his pieces, but it’s just not in the budget right now.

As chance would have it, that same week I became aware of another maker on Chat by the name of Max. When I found out he was a maker I asked to see some of his work, and he was kind enough to let me see some of his knives (Ogg Custom Knives). Now Max described his knives as not too pretty users, but I found them fascinating. It wasn’t too long before I put two and two together and asked Max if he would be interested in making a knife for me? He said, “Sure!” I sent over to Max a picture of Daniel Winklers #18 Bowie, along with Excalibur’s thread. He liked the idea, in fact that was a direction (period pieces) he was looking to get into. Being someone that feels a picture is worth 1000 words, I started doing some photo illustrations of what I thought the knife might look like.

Now, Daniel Winkler is an ABS Mastersmith and his #18 Bowie is Damascus with a beautiful period sheath by Karen Shook. I have never touched one of Max’s knives, he’s just getting into making his own Damascus, and though he makes sheaths there is no way he wanted to attempt trying to match Karen’s work. We decided that a forged blade would be more accurate for a period knife and that the sheath would have to wait. I didn’t bother to find out how much Daniel’s knife cost or how long his wait is. I have a maker that I know will do a great job, at a price I can afford, and I will probably have the knife within the month. What more could I ask for?

It does Phil! Honest to gosh. All it needs is some fins and a tail. Then we could use it in chat for slapping each other around with. It's a creative work of art, though. Hey, you could morph it into a trout knife next. Lets see that one in here Phil. Come on, you can do it.

Thats great Phil, I cant wait to see what the real deal looks like. I saw a picture of Max's knives. Not fancy, or artsy, or tactical looking, but they have something all thier own that just makes them look darn nice. I got a few other knives to get paid for and caught up on, but one of Max's Bowies like I saw in the picture is definatly on my list in the near future. Hes also a blast to have in the chat room ...Peter Pepper, Max

UPDATED and REVISED

I have heard of "Bird and Trout" knives, but you two are taking the concept to new highs..... or lows, I haven't decided.

Cool stuff you guys. Let me know when you can squeeze in my pet project... "Axe, by Max". Shouldn't be too difficult. I'm sure we can make it look like the "Bird" to match Phil's "Trout".

I assume the knife will be known as Phil's Brook(lyn) trout knife.

Cool project Phil! Karen Shook does makes period sheaths for knives other than Daniel's. They are however, not cheap.

Richard, a big fat sloppy wet kiss for ya. Velitrius, It's funny you should mention the 'Axe by Max'. I was just commissioned to make a battle axe just like the one Chingachkgook (?) used on the movie 'Last of the Mohicans'. I've done extensive research with Russell Means and his staff to get the perfect 'look' for my axe. It will be the most expensive piece I've produced so far. Now don't crap yer britches, I'm going to charge the dude $29.95 for that axe (that's right, I'm a money grubber, I admit). As seen on TV. Get your oreder in now. This axe isn't available in stores. Just dial 1-800-kiss-my-axe. Have your credit cards ready. Your order will be taken in the order it is recieved.

But, seriously folks, I'm a new maker in the forum here. Not a new maker. Just new to the forum. I hope to get to know you all in time. Just don't try to crowd in on Richard. He's very jealous and posessive. And kind of cute too.

Honestly, this forum has strengthened my resolve to be a good general purpose knife maker for the general public. But, you guys come first. If any of you are wanting to learn how to forge, just come to my shop and you'll see that you aren't the only one. You guys here on the forum get first dibs at my ugly knife makin skills, no questions asked. If you haven't noticed, I have the ugliest knife on the internet posted in the 'Shop Talk' Forum. Check it out. Then you'll see what Richard was talking about. Kind of like a sharpei puppy; so ugly it's cute. I'm truly the master of the 'UGLY' knife. Nobody else even comes close. And you can have one of these rare blades in due time. Stay tuned, more at 11:00. (Ok, I'm lame, so sue me)

Now, I'm nervous, I decided to use Max because I liked the knife that he considers it to be the ugliest knife ever made.

Plus I'm not sure that he knows I want a Bowie knife and not a Trout knife.

Hey Phil, you're the morpher with the trout knife. I'm the Bowie man. WHen you think MaxTheKnife, think Bowie. Stay focused now Phil, everything's going to be ok. One man's ugly knife is another mans' treasure. Or sumthin like that......Hmmm, trash...treasure...

i agree, it does look like a winner. Phil, i think it may even exceed your expectations and i look foward to seeing it finished as well.

...of course, if it doesn't turn out as expected, we can, as Max said, slap each other around a bit in chat with it.

Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the
subject.

Phil, hows the project coming??? Can't wait to see it! I got to see and handle a couple of Max's knives this past Saturday and he does awesome work!

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

The project seems to be moving along, but we're kind of stuck on the handle. When a maker is looking for the right piece of stag for one of my knives...I don't try to rush him.

Just as an update, this knife is coming along and is turning into quite a group project. Max Burnett is the maker, but several people have helped with either materials or advice;
Stag for the handle, Jake Evans, Stab1, J.A.Lonewolf.
Technical help, Darrel Ralph, Michael L6 Cooper.

Thanks to you all.
Max, you've got a lot of eyes on you, no pressure right?
