I've had it

I got permission to hunt my neighbor's rats. I want a high powered air rifle. I grew up with a Crosman 760 rifle and a similar pump pistol but I want something new and more powerful. I'm looking for something between $100 and $150 with a good reputation. I have shot the Benjamin and like it but it's a little high. I am open to 22cal but always shot .177. Sick of these rats, my dogs make sure they don't bother my grounds.

Any objections to using a .22LR rifle with Aguila Super Colibris or CCI Quiets?

My son bought one of the Ruger Airhawk pellet rifles a few years ago. VERY powerful and accurate. That is if you can't use a .22 rimfire. Aguila also makes a very long heavy bullet .22 in a .22 short case. Can't think of the name of it but have heard them called city cat killers.

Check out the Gamo Whispers, they have a built in suppressor. The .22 that I used to have was crazy quiet, the pellet hitting the paper was louder than the gun :). I installed a Charlie da tuna trigger and it was an amazing shooter.

Thanks people, unfortunately I can't use a 22 as I'm in a more suburban city area so I'm limited. I will look at these suggestions and thanks again.

Just in case you misunderstood my post, I was referring to a Gamo Whisper .22 Air rifle :).

Aquila Sniper Subsonics, they use a 60gr bullet, only thing is they destabilize quick. Couple barrels made for them but at the same time, close range, won't matter and they hit hard for a .22

The 22 loads that are being mentioned have less velocity than a pellet rifle, between 550-750 FPS and using a bullet that is close to the same grain weight.

The pellet guns will likely be close to breaking the sound barrier, these 22 loads are well under that

I think the Ruger does go supersonic. I live in the city limits and have used the Aguila Super Colibris a lot. No one notices the sound they make at all. My sons Ruger pellet rifle is louder than them. Great short range plinkers for places you can't shoot.

Could always go with rat shot in a 22, also, if you can get close enough to them. It shoots lead shot like a shotgun, but its tiny - almost like firing sand. Not much risk of damaging anything if you miss.

And little risk of "damaging a rat" either. The 22 shot is next to useless except shooting something at your feet. I would probably go with a CO2 type rifle (vs pump up) that is either .177 or .22 calibers. It would allow for quicker shots with less preparation.... like seeing one out the window.... rats are pretty smart and they're tough. I would use poison myself if I could limit the danger of dogs and so forth from eating the bait.

There are bait stations to prevent pets from eating the poison. Unless you let your Gerbils roam free.

What about the animals that eat the poisoned rats? Dogs (which the OP mentions having), neighbors cats and birds of prey are all unintentional targets of rat poison.
Mechanically killing (be it by trapping or weapon) is the much safer method.
