I have been commissioned to make a hunter by kniferights.org to be presented at the congressional hearing to discuss the ivory ban. I will be making a mosaic integral with ivory handles. I will be posting progress pictures along the way.

Here is the bar of mosaic (twisted w pattern) That I will be using. I went down to Jason Knights this weekend and we forged a couple bars of it.

Kyle, it is a good thing that you do. I hope that it helps each of us. Thanks for taking the time to do this piece. I am interested in what you come up with.

Thank you Jerry. I am taking this opportunity to do a few things I have not done before.

It does look good!

Anxious to see it progress!

Nice! But we need more WIP pics! ;)

Is that a "pure" full integral, or did you forge weld the guard (or bolsters?) on?

Can't wait to see this turn out, thanks for sharing! :)

Good for you, Kyle. Awesome project. Can't wait to see the end product. It will be special.

Looks great Kyle. Looking forward to seeing this progress. I had same question posed above. Is this full forged integral?

After a little clean up and a quick etch to see the pattern. Still alot more to do.

Sorry I missed the question. I forged the knife out and then I had to forge weld the bolsters on since the bar was not thick enough to forge them in.

Just when I thought I was getting a little understanding about ivory. Let me understand, you are taking a knife with ivory (elephant) to an ivory ban Congressional hearing?

I was just pointed to this thread and message. First off, I would like to thank Kyle for his generous contribution to this project and to the decades-old legal ivory donor who wishes to remain anonymous. Somewhere along the line there appears some confusion as this project came to life. This "letter opener" (hey, it's D.C. LOL!) is going to be used at a meeting of DC powerbrokers, including some members of Congress, and generally conservative media to help make the point that if the Federal ivory ban is put into effect, this gorgeous work of functional art would be rendered valueless, and for no good reason. As many of you are ware, we are currently in the midst of the comment period on the proposed federal rule (details at: http://www.kniferights.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=344&Itemid=1 ) which we and others are opposing. As the same time we are working on Congress to get a bill passed that would roll things back to where they were before all this politically-motivated ivory ban action was started (http://www.kniferights.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=305&Itemid=1 ). It is not easy to get attention in DC, or at this particular meeting with many issues vying for attention, and this is a unique opportunity using this beautiful knife to break through the clutter and get the attention of potential supporters in Congress and DC who believe in both conservation and in American property rights. Hope this clears things up, and again, thanks very much to Kyle for his generous support.

This turned out very nice Kyle. I like how you sculpted the ivory. Looks very comfortable, which seems to be your style for handles.
