Hey guys and gals,
Any of you have experience with shooting your 1911's
with real Ivory grips. Have you done alot of shooting
and did they crack or split???

I've always wanted a set of Ivories for one of my 1911's, but
was afraid of them cracking. I know, there are imitations, but I'd
like the real thing.

Let's hear your thoughts.

Thanks,

Chip, I have a set of African Ivory grips on my Colt Series 70. I have had them on for seven years and when I was given them they were about 20 years old. I shoot this gun at least once a week with an average of about 150 rounds. I don't like reloads in this gun so I use 230g factory ball. The grips are beautiful. No cracks just a nice aged look. They are thicker than wooden slabs and give me a nice grip. If I could get more I would. There is a good article in American Handgunner in one of the issues this year. the only problem you will have with ivory is getting it and it's so expensive. If you can get your hands on a set go for it.

I have a set of Ajax grips on my Colt .380 ACP. I read somewhere that they are made out of ivory dust (from milling piano keys?) and some polymer. Boy, they feel like ivory to me, and they don't crack or yellow. I know that some folks like the look of aged ivory, but I just wanted the 'look' for a custom gun and the price was right (and I had about 2 grand into just the little gun!) I think I paid 75 bucks.
