I'm relatively new to knife collecting and there are a couple I am interested in that state their handles are made of ivory micarta. Those who also have knives with this handle material, how durable is it? And in what ways do the handles need to be taken care of to ensure durability (does it need to be polished or treated often like with other items also made of ivory?) Thanks!

Micarta is pretty durable stuff, there is no real ivory in it though, it's just called that because of the color.

These grips are "antiqued ivory micarta", and about the only thing I try to do is take them off when cleaning to keep solvents away from it.

Like Bear Claw said... the "ivory" part is just the color. I have several FBs that use micarta for their handle scales and I've had no problem with them after outdoor use and getting them wet. There are several types of micarta based on the materials used to form the micarta. I use canvas micarta mostly. Still, with reasonable care like drying them when they get wet and keeping them away from cleaning solutions, you should be fine.

great, thank you all for the clarification and additonal information. what's the best recommended way to clean the handles if they get dirty, will a wet cloth suffice or some other cleaning agents as well? Thanks!

I clean all my micarta with HOT soapy water and they always come out looking brand spankin' new no matter what was on them.

I agree with DMD08, I use just hot/warm water, and even animal blood comes off without staining.

I think most ivory micarta is probably paper based micarta. I had a Falkniven PXL folder with ivory micarta that looked alright. I've been thinking about getting a set of checkered ivory micarta 1911 Colt pistol grips to go on one of my Ultimate Equipment M1911 Standard folders.
