I just finished a beautiful blade, the pattern taken from the LLoyd Harding Collection ( remember when his work was posted here ? ) ATS 34 steel, Ivory linen micarta w/water buffalo and every time I touch the knife I seem to get the micarta dirty looking. Is there something that I can put on to prevent this from happening ? Any help would be much appreciated!

Nice knives. I realy like the top ones pattern, looks realy comfortable in the hand.

Is the mycarta paper or linnen? If linnen it will be harder to keep clean. Paper if buffed out to a nice shine will still show finger prints but will be easy to wipe off. On both a coating of wax will probably help, but it's still a white material and will show anything that gets on it like a sore thumb.

Hey Will, Its paper micarta.Poor quality pics I know.Have to experiment with settings,my camera had a really hard time focusing for some reason. The micarta does show every print, smudge etc. but does wipe off,(for the most part). After posting this thread I did a search on the subject ( I know, Bass Akwards) and seems this is a common problem.I wonder if the product sold in TKS called "Gareosol" a "Clear gloss finish" would help or hinder ( by that I mean "F it up",the micarta that is.Any way, thanks for the responce and compliment.Later, wez

BTW , WilHurley if your out there, thanks for the CD.Much appreciated!!Did you get my snail mail?

Try washing your hands once and see what happens. :D Nice work. I don't use ivory Micarta, so I'm no help. I go into fits of rage with this blaze orange G-10, which also gets dirty just looking at it.

trapper, I did a small hunter with ivory paper micarta and found toothpaste and a soft bristled toothbrush cleaned the scales quite well. Plus your knife will get a good review from the dentist. :p :D

Ha , Ha , Razorback :D When I did the search I came across a thread that contained a post by you stating the toothpaste trick.I tried it and it worked well for cleaning it up.I was looking for a more long term method of keeping the micarta from picking all the fingprints and smudges that seem to appear if your hands arent washed prior to touching (watch it chiro :) ) , or slight black smudges that come from the sheath I made ( of course it had to be black to match the buf. horn ) I have some large scrap pieces of the micarta that I am going to experiment with as far as coatings go (wax ; gloss sprays such as the "Gareosol" I mentioned earlier. and whatever else I can think of).I'll keep you all posted as to the results.its such an awesome handle material as far as looks go,the only negative being the issue we are addressing.I saw a blade with Black paper micarta and it was incredible looking stuff;a must have for future works!!

Roll a plastic condom over it (like your gun barrel in the swamp),that should keep finger prints off.
Seriously, any coating (plastic spray, super glue, etc.) will only aggravate you more.Sand it to as fine a finish as you can, buff with a non staining polish, preferably by hand, coat with Renaissance or such, and wipe off as needed.
If you want white, you have to live with smudges.Your hands have to be surgically clean when finishing up the polish and handling afterward.

Thanks for all the replies. There are some real talented comedians here too :D I think I'm starting to get it,WASH MY HANDS!!Really though, thanks again. After Howies super glue post I did some searches and I have to admit it sounds very interesting, some experimenting is definatly in order here. :)
