Ivory Question

I always assume I know the answer to this, but realized I never heard it from somebody who does.
When (real) ivory begins to crack around the pins, does this in any way impact on the strength of the material or is it largely cosmetic?
Do the cracks begin to grow in length (like on a car windshield)?
Just curious...
