Does anyone know how to fix a large crack in ivory? I have a Hippo tusk handle that has developed a 1/16" wide crack the entire length of the handle. The technician at my dentist's office filled the crack with dental material but it doesn't match very well. Thanks in advance - Bubba

Tom - Thanks for the suggestion. I have another tusk standing by for my "plan #2". My plan #1 is to try using imitation ivory filler material and/or porcelain repair material blended to the right shade.

You might try an old woodworking trick. Drizzle some white shellac into the crack, then sand to mix the sanding dust with the shellac and let it dry. I'd suggest medium grit; you can always smooth it later. If you can work a good bit of dust into the shellac, it will make the crack almost disappear. Worth a try, anyway.

Tom, I guess that's why they call us knife "nuts." Jerry, I tried your "old woodworking trick." I also did the same thing with super glue and both mixtures look a little dark when they are wet. The third batch I have used is a blend of almond and white porcelain touch-up. It looks very close to the same color as the ivory. I will know more tomorrow when everything dries. Buy the way, I took "before" and "during" pictures. I will share them once I have "after" pictures tomorrow. Thanks to all.

I thought about superglue but thought it might set up too fast. White shellac should be pretty clear and if it gets enough ivory dust in it, should be close to the right color. I have mixed a credible ivory color in epoxy with a lot of white and a tiny bit of brown dry pigments, but that is a hit or miss thing and will not be removable. Shellac and superglue can be removed.

Tom, that's not a furniture thing, it's a gunstock finishing thing.
