just sharing how lucky I was someone gave me some ivory

Yes, it looks like some sort of baculum or other bone. Close up shots of the cut portion and the ends would help.

uploadfromtaptalk1391030353078.jpg my ancestors call it ivory because it's solid bone just like teeth or ivory my mistake not stating this.they made hooks out of it like Eskimo s did walrus tusk.I will not post this in the future

What animal, and what part does bone that dense come out of? Very interesting.

A baculum is called oosik when it comes from a walrus or seal. It is the penile bone of those animals. Many other animals have one...including whales. A whale oosik/baculum is a very different shape, more resembling a squid pen ( mantle bone).

Oosik is used to make knife handles and tools by the eskimo and other Inuit groups.

That makes it extra special!
I've seen it fosil, never fresh like this.
Should make interesking handles

One of the great things about oosik is that it remains grippy when it gets wet and cold. Very useful in northern climes.

Plus, it grosses-out my teenage son - "Dad, you are grinding up walrus junk! I'm not touching that!"

I had a knife handled in pink oosik. It was a smallish bowie shape. A couple of gals stopped by and one picked it up. She said she loved the look and feel of the handle, and asked what it was.......... and I told her. Her eyebrows shot up and she set it down quickly. About 15 minutes later, the other gal came over and bought the knife :)
