I am a newbie to the IWB carry for a folder. I carry my CRK small Sebenza in a G2 (Gary Graley) leather sheath. I will have my CRK Umnumzaan today and I will have a sheath made for that, but because of G2's schedule it cant be done for a couple weeks.

So since the knife is a bit larger from what I read than the large Sebenza I was thinking of carrying it IWB. How do most of you do the IWB carry. I am right handed, so do I put it on the right side between my hip and butt cheek with the knife in my pants and the clip to my jeans between my jeans and inside of my belt? Or do most people carry it in the front of their pants?

Sorry if this is a dumb qustion but I want to do it right and not lose a $400 knife for being stupid :)

You really just have to experiment and find out what works best for you. I almost never carry a knife IWB as I prefer front pocket carry but I have, on occasion, carried a knife clipped just in front of an IWB holster which is worn just behind my right hip (the knife running parallel with the leading edge of the holster). I found that this only really worked well for me if I was carrying a larger folder (3 3/4"+ blade length) in tip down position. Anything 3 1/2" or smaller gets clipped tip up in my right front pocket.

My skirmish or CS rajah II: Hip, knife in the pants and the clip to the jeans... discreet but nor confortable.

I used to carry my 3"blade folder tip down in front, but I've found that it is much more comfortable, escpecially when sitting down, to have it on my side, behind my hip...As far EDCing a $400 knife I wouldn't do it, at least where I live. If your knife is legal to carry where you are, then you've got no worries. But because you seem to have some concern about carrying, my advice would be to buy a nice $40-$80 blade for EDC. If It get's taken away you've still got your nice knife at home. Just my thought's.

Oh sorry, maybe I wasnt clear. I am not concerned about carrying the $400 Umnuzaan I just didnt know if people carry it in a sheath as I do my small regular Sebenza in a G2 sheath or IWB. I just got the knife 10 minutes ago and it is big. I will carry it inside my right front pocket and when I get my leather sheath from G2 in 2 weeks I will carry it that way.

Oh sorry, yeah it's a big knife, try carrying it a couple different ways over the next week, see what work's.

I only carry IWB if I don't have pockets. ..being a raft guide means most of my lower body type wardrobe consists of board shorts... and I don't like anything other than a little cash and a phone in the cargo pocket.

IWB in the belly/hip crease.

I find the knife easier to keep control of (no knives walking off) and I don't like any more pressure points on my kidneys than needed.

Same here. No problem with a spyderco military at all.

would this method be weak side carry? seems like it would be better/easier for deployment... especially given the tip down clip of the Military

I carry IWB w/ the knife a little off horizontal. Usually just to my right of my belt buckle. I clip it to my pants and my belt pretty much covers the clip. Even w/ a tucked in shirt, the exposed part is covered.

I generally carry strong side.

The angle is off for weak side carry, though I have carried a knife such (weak side) when something else occupied the strong side area.

EDC currently: I carry at 2 o'clock (front right, 12 is the belt buckle) IWB. It's easier to reach. Have read somewhere that IWB at the back might cause injury when you fall on your back.

However, for some knives that has high thumb stud, it might cause the blade open due to body movement. I got 2 shirts with hole due to the tip of the knife went into it when it's pulled upward. I think I have to file that thumbstud down. It's higher than the knife handle's thickness, that's why.

Other than that, on my other knife, it's ok.

I prefer tip-down knives, carried in the waistband, on the right side front (is this the appendix area? I don;t know).

A "newbie" (I know, I know...newbie to IWB carry) with a G2 sheath? THAT is impressive!

Yeah a little confusing, I am a newbie to IWB carry. I am not a newbie to knives or CRK knives as I was a dealer of CRK knives for many years before I sold my internet company. Can't wait for 2 weeks when G2 makes a sheath for my new CRK Umnumzaan I got yesterday :)

Sometimes I carry my Spydeco Endura IWB appendix style. I find a good angle for it, and can hardly feel it. The clip somewhat disappear behind the belt and the belt loop just to the right of the belt bucle. Even a little pinch of the t-shirt will usually hide the top of the handle:)

After checking the Umnumzaan, I found that it has a high thumb stud, similarly protruding above the handle scale, to my cheap SRM 611. If you have it with pouch / sheath, that might not be a problem, however, if you have it without sheath, and especially a tip up, it might easily got open and 'poke' you.

I'd not want my knife to stab me during emergency just because of the blade got stuck out a bit during carrying. You might want to consider that.
On another front, if legal carry is not an issue, front right pocket should be better, as the blade will be pressed against the pocket seam, thus preventing accidental opening.
