Iwb Carry

So, I started a thread a while back for a fixed blade recommendation. I took all the comments, thought long and hard, and then saw a good deal on a bark river springbok and sprung for it. At least, I think and hope it was a good deal.

Anyways, I was hoping hall could point me in the direction of iwb carry. I don't really understand how Amy of that works, or how it's comfortable at all. I've got a bit of a belly on me right now, so nothing can really go in front. I'm always, always in jeans, and I always have a thick western belt on. I just don't understand how people can carry a knife comfortably on the inside. I've seen people do it with guns, and that makes even less sense to me. I think I'm going about it all wrong. Any recommendations welcome. I think the overall length of the springbok is 8.25, and I'm looking to edc it. Thanks!

Try it at about 4-5 o'clock. A lot of it depends on the sheath too. There are IWB sheaths available.

Sometimes it is more difficult for heavier people.

With regard to IWB carry of a fixed blade knife, I would think you would first need to determine/choose how you plan to draw the knife from the sheath. Example: forward grip vs. reverse grip - right vs left hand.

Also, the primary purpose for carrying (utility, etc.) will affect how & where locations of carry.

You may also want to consider horizontal cross-draw left or right side of belt buckle (I have a friend that carries extra weight and he adopted this carry location from how I many times carry). Situation & knife dependant I use any/all of these carry locations.

Left & right side I prefer IWB somewhere between 3:00-4:00 w/handle angled slightly forward (same for a handgun). If you are uncomfortable with IWB a small handgun, chances are will be same issues for a fixed blade.

Seriously consider the implications of IWB being perceived by LEO as a concealed condition (review local municipality & state codes/laws governing location of carry).

The general rule of thumb for IWB pistol carry is one waist size up from your current size in both pants and belt. Granted most knives are thinner than pistols (TOPS notwithstanding), but if your pants are tight you've gotta upsize or you'll be miserable.

If I am carrying just a knife IWB it goes back right hip in a kydex sheath with a Spyderco G-Clip. I usually have my ccw IWB on my back right hip though (4-5 o'clock) so in that case the fixed blade would go on the back of my left hip. Same deal. Kydex sheath with a G-Clip.

IWB doesn't work for everyone. When I first started carrying a pistol (medium size) I carried it IWB. Now I carry on the belt and IWB seems like it would be very uncomfortable. Sometimes I carry a Spyderco native light weight IWB. It all depends on the person and the item. What works for one won't work for all.
Best of luck.

With pistols a good holster will make all the difference. I used to carry a full size sig 220 IWB, but it was because of the holster nothing more.

As far as knives go you just haft to play around with them . Some can be carried scout carry just fine. If I'm going for IWB depending on the clothes I'll be anywhere from 3 to 5 oclock. Sometimes 6 with a little cant to the blade.

Same with guns though the sheath makes it or breaks it . Like For me Daniel Winkler makes the easiest to carry sheaths I've ever tried .

Just experiment . Wear your knife IWB around the house and sit down and stand up and just move around as much as you can. See if the knife pokes you if you sit down or rubs or pokes you when you walk and adjust accordingly.

It's a real personal thING though what works for me you may hate .

I sometimes carry an Izula IWB; I took the little plate/clip that came in the "kit," and slide the clip part off, reversed it, and put it back on. Now the sheath is inside the waistband, with the clip outside; it hooks onto the belt nicely. Granted it's a small knife, and I don't know what you're interested in carrying. Just sharing something that worked out for me.
