Well here is my latest sheath. It's set up for in waistband carry and designed to have the leather straps snap around the belt on either side of a belt loop. Kind of Spec-Ops inspired I suppose. Took out tonight on a two mile walk to test out the comfort and forgot I was carrying it. Hope the same holds true when I'm wearing it while driving. Still learning every time I do a project. Lessons learned this time were: 1. Be careful not to mark the leather with the drill press (yes I cheat) by going to far through or you'll leave little circular marks :( 2. Use something other than Tandy's Eco Flow black. I've had nothing but trouble with the black rubbing off the leather no matter what I do. It's been recommended that I try Fiebing's. I'm open to other suggestions as well. Thanks for looking!

Nice work! That's a great looking sheath. Love that NEDC, too.

I'm new at working with leather, but I've noticed the same thing with the Eco Flow dyes. The darker the color, the worse it seems to be. No matter how long I let it sit, a lot still comes off when I apply leather finishes. I haven't tried Fiebing's yet, which is an obvious next step, but I'm wondering if the same thing happens with it, also.

I've had good luck with Fiebing's USMC Black and Tandy's Pro Dye in black on my holsters, but I use Fiebing's Leather Sheen in a rattle can as a final finish. Fiebing's dyes are well-known for being bleeders (some worse than others), so it's a good idea to apply some sort of sealer over them. I make sure to buff the piece really well with a shoeshine brush and/or T-shirt/rag to ensure I've got any residual stuff off before applying a final finish.

Nice work! Yeah, you have to be careful with the drill press.:p

As far as black dye goes, I use vinegaroon. A solution of vinegar and iron/steel. Do a little research and you can find out how to prepare and use it. It's super easy and the color cannot run or rub off. If you have any questions shoot , me a PM.

Regards,

Nick

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to give that vinergaroon a try. Gotta be better than what I'm using.
