Another age old question- Izula or Swamp Warden?
I've had the izula for about a year and it was my edc all summer- it's just a great size for dropping into my cargo shorts. I liked it from the first use and was curious with the scales. I like it even more since I put them on. It's been a great edc- opening packages, breaking down boxes and as I painted, it was helping me dig out nails.
I just got the Swamp Warden a bit ago for fun and wanted to see how they stack up.
Initial impressions of the Swamp Warden are nice. It's bigger than the izula, fills the hand more and the broader pommel area feels secure. Came pretty dull and I've put a little time into the edge and it will sharpen nicely. SR101 is my favorite steel and it just needs some time and work to get sharp.
Here are a couple photos for size and perspective. The Izula just dissapears into my cargo pants and jeans. The Warden, barely. Gotta like the size of the Izula, I got a neck knife for easy carry and the Izula does that fine...even with the scales. On the SAK- you can see the most used and important tool.
I did a bunch of wood processing and have to really give the Izula credit. It works big and comfortably. The vibration with the Warden as I split wood was unpleasant. I did hem and haw a little about taking off the scales or not- but I figured I would test them like I use and carry them. The edge and grind on the izula was great too for shaving wood. The warden was a step or two behind. I'm not sure if an improved edge will make a difference or no with the warden- I'm tending to doubt it.
I've been really pleased with the Izula's performance. I did a pretty big comparison of a bunch of bigger blades and the Izula was a big over-achiever!
Here, I have to give the nod to the Izula. It is a work horse, came in great shape with a wonderful edge, is easy to maintain and is smaller for discreet carry. Way to go ESEE! All my favorite knives are Swamp Rats and it's hard to be impartial sometimes.
Might have to see how the new Scrap Yard necker compares soon too...
