SO I was in Sweden for a week doing a canoe survival course which involved the usual stuff: loads of fishing, firemaking and eating ant eggs :)

Great ant nests to be found there, really big ones too. The last day it occured to me to take a picture of one with the izula.

<EDIT>
I just put up a video on the fallkniven f1 in sweden on my youtube channel.
Starting at part 2, you can see the ant hill being raided for eggs

part 1, fallkniven f1 knife review in Sweden

part 2, fallkniven f1 knife review in Sweden

</EDIT>

For all you guys and girls that like to now:
put clothing, but preferably plastic/tarp/tent stuff on the ground and create some dark shadowy places by folding it. Then digg into the ant hill (no gloves please, ants like to get in there) and throw it on the tarp, you could optionally check where you can find lots of eggs inside the ant hill, but ants are not your friend when you open up their house, so time/speed is a factor. Eggs are spread all over the ant hill anyway.

When (part of) the ant's nest is on the tarp, the ants first priority is to protect the eggs and they will start moving them immediately to dark/shadowy places but they can only go to the wrinkles on the tarp we made.

After a while, pools of eggs will have formed there and they will be much easier to collect from the tarp than by just handpicking them from the ant's nest. And you will be able to stay away from the ant frenzy that's going on.

Taste: neutral

Oh, and don't do this while running around naked and smeared with honey... :D

enjoy the pics y'all!

That is a huge anthill!! and a neat trick to keep in the old survival toolbox. I only wish there could have been a closer shot of the two ant's together. Thanks for sharing with us and glad you had a great trip.

nice pictures!
on this side of the pond, the ants dig down - I guess yours build mounds due to the water table being close to the surface?
that's pretty, cool, and impresive - thanks for sharing!

Yeah, ive seen alot of those hiking in Scandinavia, but ive never thought about eating their eggs.

Where in Sweden was the course held?

amazing isn't it? Actually, more like dinosaurs' eggs :D

It was near hagfords on the lakes northeast of it, the picture of the sunset on the bredsjon lake, the other one of the ant hill near tyngsjo lake. Had a blast.

I'll be posting a review on it on my youtube channel, including the egg gathering. The review is on the f1 though :) did a review on the west highland way of my rc-4 already, it was now the fallknivens' turn to go. Of course, only rightfully so since it's a swedish knife ;)

geez that's a big anthill! The darn termite mounds I've seen are nuts...but an anthill that big? I think that's even more impressive! Thanks for the pics

oh, and from a paddler...thanks for shot of your boat. :)

Nice vid, it looks like you had a blast. Ive been to several places in Sweden, and its a backpackers paradise!

I liked the sheath system you had for the F1, it looks very complete although it was abit too bulky for my taste. Does Martin Swinkle have a website with his sheaths?
