Izula Belt Clip from Hoopster

Today I received a belt clip style Izula sheath from fellow forum member Hoopster. Let me preface this by saying I don't own any other kydex sheaths to compare it to, other than a handful of kydex holsters for my handguns.

My goal was to find a slim profile, easy on/off, belt clip sheath that I could clip inside the belt and outside the waist on my weak side - typically a handgun rides on the strong side.

Communication, shipping, and price was great. The sheath seems to be well made, does exactly what I expected it to, and thus far has met my expectations. Retention seems to be comparable to the injection molded OEM sheath. It rides close and comfortable although I cannot comment on the long term comfort since I just got it today. I am very aware that any clip style kydex is more prone to failure versus a leather or rubber loop, but convenience often times trumps durability - for me anyway.

A few pics and a public thank you to Hoopster. :D

gotta get one of those-really like the design and now seeing you wear it-yup thats the puppy. thanks

That is really smooth. can you wear it with the handle down? Thats how I wear mine now, with the factory sheath.

I'm sure I could wear it handle down, just not my preference. It takes a little thumb push to release the knife from the sheath. Basically same retention level as the OEM sheath.

Hey man, glad you like it so far. It's funny that I initially designed it to go outside the belt although I did try to make it as versatile as possible. Looks good to actually see it in use and it looks natural inside the belt like that. You've expanded my perspective as far as just how many ways the Izula can be carried. I've got a few more ideas for sheaths kicking around in my head. I'll probably try to perfect as many carry options as I can, at least as long as I continue to enjoy doing it.

How does the width from the top of the blade to the bottom of the blade compare to the original Izula sheath? I wear mine horizontally above my left front pocket and would like somthing with a clip instead of paracording it to my belt.

I'm not sure about this one, but in general, the width at the beginning of the sheath is about the same or very slighly wider than the factory sheath on this style and a little narrower on the style listed in my signature line. The factory sheath is actually a little narrower at the tip of the blade since it doesn't require rivets in it's construction. I have seen a sheath that was pretty narrow at the tip but it was an odd design.

Where the kydex shines is the thinness. It is also a smoother design without the molded areas of the factory one. And yes, the clip is way more convenient than paracord, that was one of my initial reasons for trying to make something different. I may see if it's practical to just make a clip for the factory sheath but I still prefer kydex in this role, especially since it's easier to re-sheath the knife.
I carry in a kydex neck sheath everyday and like it a lot better than the factory one but for some reason I can't part with my factory ones yet. I really love the snap of the factory one as well.

Pretty sweet, but isn't that a little high on the hip?
How do you draw that thing?

That's a good point. I've since switched to g-shaped clips which can be adjusted at 45 degree cants which seem easier than a straight upwards draw. Another option is a leather belt loop with snap. These will attach at one of the rivets and drop the setup down some and allow some flexibility/movement.

Big Red, if this becomes an issue with you just let me know and I'll send out a different clip for you to try.
Edit, did I already include another clip with your sheath? IIRC I did but now I'm not positive.

Hoopster, you did include a 'g-style clip' with this sheath... It is a little high on the draw, but I'll probably just leave it where it is.

Maybe I'll try to get a lower drop with the g-clip when I get home this evening.

I personally like the 45 degree cant. Let me know if there's any way I can help. Although I don't have any long term warranty, I do want to make sure you're happy initially.

Update... I have since gone to a horizontal carry at about 12:30-1:00, right hand draw. This is much more comfortable and easier to draw. It takes up a fair amount of real estate on my waist but seems to be a much better, more comfortable, carry method.

No pics at the moment... Same setup as above, belt clip turned 90 degrees (not the g-clip), with blade riding next to belt buckle and handle above my right pocket.

I looked at the third picture and thought "that looks like it would be awkward to draw". But what you describe sounds much better - I would imagine drawing the knife from the new setup would be smooth & easy.

I was wondering if the holes were spaced evenly enough to do a horizontal carry - thanks for answering before I could ask!
