Izula Carabiner hole?

I've seen the hole in the Izula's butt referred to a couple of times as a carabiner hole.

I've noticed that this has even been maintained with the slabs offered for the Izula's handle.

Is it correct that this hole is intended for a carabiner? If so does anyone use it as such? Only just ordered my knife so not tried it yet, but trying to think of a situation where I'd want to 'biner it to my harness, pack etc, more so if i did where I'd ditch the sheath.

I've seen mention a few times of using it as a pinky hole for added grip, but then the wrappings of the handle seem to obscure this (either partially due to reducing the diameter of the hole, or blocking it with a knot).

Any input much appreciated.

I use mine as a pinkie hole. I find it is very useful to let it swing down while doing intricate tasks with all my finger then flip it up to finish the cutting tasks. Examples are de-breasting dove and cleaning small fish.

I do not think it was originally designed for a carabiner nor do I think it would be a very good idea to use it in that manner. I do not reccomend using a tie off lanyard on knives(as a leash). I used to have my dive knife on a retaining leash to my boyancy compensator for many years but I have since witnessed a fellow diver injure themselves. The leash was long enough to allow for full arm movements but it happened to catch on another attachment so when he extended his arm the leash prevented the knife from going and his hand slid up the handle and onto the blade.

To be perfectly honest I suspect the hole is for rigidity and asthetics more the anything else but what do I know.

Thanks. I like the notion of using it as a pinky hole to retain the knife whilst doing other work (rather than say resheathing it, sticking it in a log etc). I could see that being very useful.

I was toying with the idea of using a press-stud under the loop as an extra layer of security (i.e. male part sits inside the loop and female part buckles over it to give the knife a positive closure.

I am not sure what it was intended for but I use it as a pinky hole. It makes for a great grip. That one of the reasons I did not like the paracord wrap iwas becuase it blocked the pinky hole. It is another reason the scales work so well for me. Between the grips and using the hole when needed it makes for a great grip. I love the scales.

We did indeed design the hole to snap a carabiner in. That way you can carry it on gear or anywhere else with the sheath slid over the knife to protect it and never worry about losing the knife. True, it's not immediately accessible that way but rarely do I find myself needing a knfie immediatley that my pocket folder doesn't work.

Shon and I discussed this yesterday also. We have not gotten started on the project but hope to get crankin' on it soon. We are still shooting for end 2010.

Thanks for the clarification :)

It makes sense to have the option I guess, plus its obvious from the posts here that it has a good deal of other utility value as well.
