After receiving my ESEE fire kit I decided I wanted something to strike it with that wouldn't ruin my blades edge.I ended up with this........

I followed the example of the other clip point blades in the ESEE line.I call it my "Deadly Little Bastard" mod because of guy I work with says my Izula is "one deadly little bastard".I named it in his honor.
I didn't design it to be razor sharp just sharp enough to get lots of sparks from a fire steel.I used a chainsaw file to get the back curves right and a coarse diamond stone from a lansky set to do the rest.On and off it took me 3 nights of working at it.
I'll do an in-depth review this weekend.

I have used chainsaw files to cut ferrocerium striker notches in blades before but nothing as nice as my Izula. I wonder how much of a stress riser wound be created by doing that?

nice mod!
I've wondered (to myself) why so many pics show the steels being struck against the cutting edge...
I've used firesteels for decades with the back spine or the jimping of knives...never the blade.
but that's just me I guess.

You've done this with RC/ESEE knives? I've so far preferred not to file the spine, and that's why I really like the idea of the new C.P. versions.

Thats why I have strikers on all my firekits-I just can't bring my self to use the blade unless in a survival situation.

yes, I've done it with the IZULA, HEST, and 5. that's all I own (so far).

It takes a couple passes over a brick for me to "bare" the very top edge of the spine or the jimping...just a touch...to get under the coating...but then it works great! :)

the strikers work great too...one of my steels came with one...one I made a hacksaw blade striker with a dremel and put it on some paracord...but the one I use I the most is just plain steel, no striker.

Cool mod.
I just have the ESEE-3MIL-CP for that, though.
For me EDC kit, I just have a Scout firesteel with the factory striker. The factory striker that comes with the Light-My-Fire firesteels now works the best of anything I've used, including the bare edge of an ESEE-3 that I tried, or a hacksaw blade.

BUT, like I said, nice mod to the Izula. I'm certainly not knocking it.

Boy I wish I had that kind of time on my hands, I used stones in the past but after countless hours with my knives my wife was starting to worry about my sanity.

Nice work but if you invested in a belt sander you'd have that job done scary sharp in about 10mins..

A friend gave me a knife to sharpen with serrations, well he knows I hate serrations and told him I wont sharpen that part of the knife, he said do what you thinks best.. Needless to say he ended up with a plain edged knife, and he loves it.. :D

Unlike the mod just be careful you are not breaking any local laws regarding having a double edged knife

I had the same idea, worked out well to! although it does make you more careful with the little guy thou (the izzy). i have more than one cut for my in-attention. but functionality wise it works out really well. nice job.
