I've been trying to figure out a use for the hole the handle of these two and can't really think of much. I also notice nearly everyone that cord-wraps the handles winds up filling in most of it. Is anyone using it for any reason and what might that be?

i like to keep my pinky in there when gripped, also makes for a quick draw from a lashed or clipped sheath

I asked Jeff that once. He said it was a hole, that looked cooler and added some more support and balance to the handle. 'Bout it, really. I know some guys like to twirl their knives with it. :D

Yeah, I twirl it when bored. Probably not that safe, though.

Say you're cutting something, and you need both hands. Rather than setting the knife down, you can slip your pinky through the hole and let the knife hang from your pinky while your other fingers are free to do whatever. Then swing the knife back up into your hand to resume cutting.

This was my theoretical use for the hole, I can't recall an actual situation when I've implemented this technique.

I figured it was a pinky ring. :) Like Saturated stated above, you can let it hang while your other fingers are busy with whatever. Also, I see people slip their pinky in there when they are actually gripping the knife. It felt awkward to me that way so I don't do it. Either way, I paracord wrapped mine, and I made sure to not wrap the hole like alot of people, because I definately can't fit my finger in there with it wrapped.

I did see one guy, can't remember who, but he actually paracord wrapped the handle but when it came down to the hole it seemed like he had designed a miniature "dreamcatcher" style thing inside the hole. Pretty cool, but I'm sure it took some patience and time. Which I don't have either. Maybe someone can come along and post a picture of what I'm talking about.

I figured it was there for the same reason as the loop on a bird & trout knife - scraping out the guts...

I can't think of a good reason to put a carabiner through there.

That might be a good safety tip for Guyon's thread "do not put clip a carabiner to your knife handle."

Forgot all about that. I forgot about Sh@rp making a "carabiner model" of G10 scales for the Esky.

And to Oregon Fal'er. That's a -great- idea, man. I'm going to try and figure something up now. Maybe a rubber inner ring for the compass to fit snug into.

...which would always display in which direction the blade is? Remember the knife is made from steel that will make a compass point in the wrong direction.

That's a safety feature, so you will always know which way the business end is to avoid it with you cutable appendages :D

Makes a cool though confusing insult too as in, "Hey, stop banging my knife on that rock, you EsKabarHole!".

It's for using like a monocle during impromtu Colonel Klink impersonations;) Hogan....!

I wear mine horizontal on my belt and I'm thinking of using the whole to thread some cord or such through while I'm hiking as an added retention system that can be easily taken off while at camp. It's pretty solidly in the sheath but I'd like an extra security measure if I'm gonna bushwhack.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that. But on my esky I've had a firesteel hidden in the wrap before and a light tied to the cordage. I guess I was just thinking it would be on the knife so you'd have it with you when needed and not so much a permanent part of the knife.

Didn't think about that. That ruins my plans. :( Well, perhaps I can come up with some other clever plan for that hole.
