My son is in his first week long boy scout camp this week. As a gift to him for toughing it out and making his way through this next challenge I will be presenting him with an Izula when I pick him up later in the week.

I actually ordered a pair becasue I know Im gonna want one myself once I get one in hand.

Update the Izula pair arrived today. Thanks for the speedy shipping TwoWolves! I will post a pic of them after I have given my son's to him.

How do these feel in the hand when not wrapped? (awesome gift btw! My dad used to get me knives, and now I get even nicer ones for him and we are both still stoked)

I may be a little more stoked about it than he is but I know he thought the picture of the Izula Ant on the knife was really cool when he saw it in pictures in the past. So I picked a Tan one for him so the ant would really stand out.

I am sure he will like it though at his age he is more into the flashy blades at this point like swords and some of the fantasy knives. I cringe when he find some frost cutlery 420J steel knife that is "so cool" and just has to show it to me. :D

I sent him with a SAK to camp and they were given their chit that allows then them to carry and use a pocket knife and were given carving projects to work on throughout the week.

Nice. Izulas would be great for boy scouts. Unfortunately, I've heard of a lot of troops outlawing folding or "one hand open" knives.

Great thread. Brings back a lot of memories of my childhood. My dad and granddad were always carrying and using knives so I had one by them time I was old enough to walk. My aunt thought I was too young and that I would end up killing myself with it.

As for the Boy Scouts, they got way too politically correct years ago. I still like the concept of the Scouts but the upper management sucks, IMO.

I agree with Jeff. In the early 70's, boys were encouraged to explore the world and use their minds. Scout camp was where I learned canoeing, archery, shooting, etc. Skills that I still use today.

I mentioned to the troop leader that I had read a thread about some troops completely forbidding knives all together. He gave me the strangest look and said "How in the world do they qualify for many of the scout skills if they are not allowed to use knives?" We boith just shrugged. For the most part all the kids in my son's troop use folding pocket knives. Sheath knives can be a little more touchy becasue you know some kid is gonna show up with a Rambo 2 bowie knife. ;) That is not to say they are not allowed but it requires more policing. The most common knife I saw at camp was an SAK and unfortunately some really crappy SAK import knock offs.

There is a LOT of lattitude in the way a troop is run. If a troop in your area sucks check out some of the others around there is likley to be a variety the way they do things. We have a lot of people from different areas in the troop we are involved with because they like the way the troop is run better than ones in their immediatre area.
