I read on the site that it's flat ground but doesn't say anything about the edge. Is it V grind? What angle approximately?

Yes, the edge bevel is 20°, give or take a smidge due to the fact that they are hand sharpened.

Must be an Emerson owner. :D

The Izula has a V-grind and RAT tries to ship them out with as close as they can get to a 20° angle per side.

What do you guys think about V grinds versus convexed ones?

my izula was the sharpest from the factory i've ever purchased. it's taken me a bit to convex it, but it slices bread better than most bread knives i've used....

i guess the short answer is "yes."

If that's directed at me I don't get it.

Eh, nvm. :foot:

I think V grinds are fine and after a few sharpenings the edge will start to convex any way. People say convex edges are easier to maintain in the field and can take more abuse that V grinds, but I'm sure there isn't that much of a difference. It's more of preference than it is performance. Either one will work just fine.

Sharp is sharp. Mine will be convex because I don't feel like bolting the platen back on my Kalamazoo today. :D

I'm no expert on sharpening, but a few swipes on the Spyderco Sharpmaker gaves me a very sharp edge. Not hair splitting sharp, but definitely sharper than you need for shaving hair. Sharp enough that if you try to shave hair on your forearm, you need to be very careful that the blade doesn't bite. (Please don't ask how I know>)

The angle on my Izula seems like a perfect match for the Sharpmaker.

These darn RAT knives just get better and better.

Yep the sharpmaker works fine. I usually strop after finishing up on the sharpmaker and it gets the edge hair popping sharp and the stropping helps polish up the edge a little.

I still need to pick up one of those double sided strops w/ compound from KSF.

Got my compound in today, picked up some leather from a local hobby shop and will be making my strops, plus a field strop using a paint stir stick like they did in the KSF videos.
