Izula II Question

I just ordered a Izula II online. I plan to use it as a neck knife. I will use it for everday household chores. Light duty.

I dont care for a thick (read bad geometry) edge.

Does the Izula come with an bevel that looks like it was designed to cut down a tree or is it fairly thin at the edge?

If it is thick, I will probably grind a relief and go with a 30 deg inclusive.

Just curious as to what you all that use the Izula think.

From what I understand the factory edge is hand sharpened at aprox. 20 degrees. It is durable and slices well.

I decided to get this knife after reading favorable reviews on it. I dont think I have read anything BUT favorable reviews on this one.

The edge is ground to approximately 40 deg inclusive. They are done by hand so it may vary a little bit. Grinding the shoulder at 30 deg inclusive makes for a less sharp transition from edge to coating and reduces friction therefore smooths the cutting action. At least that is my opinion anyway. Many here will also advocate using a convex edge.

If you had a spyderco sharpmaker with the diamond hones, you could do a double-bevel using the 20 (40 inclusive) and 15 (30 inclusive). Use the diamond hones to re-profile it to the 30 inclusive, and then use the 20 side to make the actual cutting edge at 20 degrees......(40 inclusive).

If you go talk to some of the sharpening nerds (i try to be one) a lot of people like having a double-bevel knife for a more every-day utility knife. each time you resharpen you'll use the 20 and then re-profile with the 30 when the bevels get too small to resharpen.

Feel free to PM/email me with questions and I can find some links online or on the forum.

I might make a double-bevel with my EDC esee-3-mil-s

They are usually quite close to 40 degrees inclusive.

I must say, my Izula 2 came SHARP.
Possibly the sharpest factory edge I have ever seen. It was impressive.

same with mine. I own them all now and it was the sharpest of all.

I don't find the Izula to be thick at all, even with 40* inclusive. I actually fixed my bevels up a little bit to get them flat and symmetrical so it's not like it was from factory, but they're .040" just behind the edge, so I wouldn't call it thick at all.

I haven't felt the need to reduce it to 30* unless I shave with it. I'd rather have it be nice and durable at 40* than to use my Izula where I should be using a razor.
