I'm soaking my new Izula in vinegar to get a nice dark patina on the bare steel areas. The cutting edge darkened fairly fast, but the laser etchings are taking a lot longer, and aren't darkening evenly. Is there some type of coating on them? I tried scrubbing them with some rubbing alcohol but it didn't seem to help much.

Thanks for any info. Love the Izula!

bare area of steel will always darken faster than other area's of the blade that are not bare, laser etched has a golden coating on it, so give it some time.
then again I could be rambling too :D

If the vinegar gives insuffecent results try perma blue.

I have used it with very good results on alot of carbon steel.

Yep. That's the stuff I use. Easy as pie and gives great results.

I did it on the handles of my NWA's O1 Steel and on a Landi 1095 steel (no pic of Landi yet)
The blueing will wear alittle on the handle area if you use your blades but O1 steel will rust like a mo-fo from sweat just like 1095 and this helps keep that from happening.

That would be my guess too. When the laser heats the metel during etching I bet there's some reaction with the steel and oxygen that form a protective oxide layer.

After about 2 hours in the vinegar it worked on the etchings. Looks great. Also did a Mora while I had the glass full of vinegar.
