Izula lost its point! :(

So I, in my infinite wisdom, have rounded the tip of my izula down in a short amount of time using my sharpmaker. :grumpy: This is super annoying. Its not too bad, but it is there and I've already started fixing it with better, more proper sharpmaker technique, however, this process is a bit slow for me. I miss my pointy Izula! Is there something I can do that will fix the point quickly without messing up the edge geometry of the tip, or do I just need to continue taking away material slowly? My only tools to work with are the sharpmaker and a lansky sharpening system. Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!

You can use the grooves in the sharpmaker stones to bring back the tips. I wish I could find my sharpmaker instructions. I think they tell you the way position the tip in there. Spyderco gives you replacements instruction manuals for free if you call. I'm sure someone would be able to describe how to do it.

As far as rounding the tip. I've come across two methods on preventing that on the sharpmaker, which may also apply on the lansky. 1. Start with tip first when gliding the edge down on the stones away from you or 2. Start with the other end of the edge but when you get to the tip, don't let it slide off the stone, stop before the tip loses contact with the stone and lift off.

I sharpen my knives going in two directions on the sharpmaker. I put the tip on the stone and push towards the center of the blade, then from the choil to about the center. That way I preserve the tip and don't wear it out going off the end of the stone.

Hmm i missed the part about getting the tip back then. Mine is also a bit "pointless" now, getting it back a bit more every time.

*cough(Lansky!)cough* :)

seriously...I think I'm the only person ever to not be able to use the sharpmaker very well.
My sharpmaker thanked me when I packed it up when I sold it. lol!

I like the way you think.

People usually say it the other way around. Trash Lansky and buy the Sharpmaker. I'll just buy both :foot:

I like the Sharpmaker alot, but, like any other sharpener, it has its advantages and disadvantages. For my everyday, utilitarian sharpening purposes, it works like a charm. If you're after something more precise and specialized than just a touch-up, I like doing it the old-fashioned way.

Good luck with your Izula.

go SLOW and dont drag the tip when you pull through.... the sharpmaker is notorious for removing tips! and I dont use mine anymore DMT for me

I would tell everyone this. Dump the bulky, picky, have to have on a table, exact set up, don't dare missing changing the angle of the rods, slides, dodads and gobblestppers. Go and get a good stone, a simple hone, and then start shaving:D And ya can take it with ya, and do it anywhere.

Gagets..Bah.. get some stones. So easy to do.;)

The sharpmaker actualy learned me to freehand a bit. Now i use the spyderco double stuff. With that, i can get a dull knife shaving in 10minutes. Angles probably aren't verry consistent.... But hey, Rome wasn't build in one day. Thinking about getting the Edge Pro Apex..
