Just got my izula and decided to remove coating from the spine. Now I am considering a notch in front of the gimping to catch a ferro rod better. Does anyone know the best way to do so. Any advice would be great.

You could use a dremel cut-off wheel to cut a V notch, a square notch would be harder I think. If it's just for a ferro rod then I would just sand off the coating where you want it to strike and make sure the spine has a 90 degree angle of bare metal, seems like less work and maintains the clean lines of the izula.

Use paint stripper to remove the coating
Use a round file to square an edge for the ferro rod.

THIS! ^

not this ^ - cutting a V in the knife causes a weak spot which can turn into a crack. While ESEE would honor the warranty, you'd be out shipping and a knife while waiting for the replacement.
Chainsaw files cut round notches that don't cause the stress point.

I'm still having a hard time getting a straight 90* angle with a file actually getting no sparks at all

All you want to do is make a small squared edge. You're doing something wrong in your technique and trying too hard. It's not something that should require extensive work to accomplish. The steel is not super hard on that knife to begin with.

The spine of the Izula isn't really squared too well, stripping the coating and polishing the sides here a little bit is pretty essential. Just use any double-cut file. The 1095 is soft, but will still dull a single-cut.
