OK, I received my new OD Izula (along with scales) in the mail today, and I have to say that I finally understand the hype. And with this receipt, I think I officially have become an ESEE fanboy.
This is a really well-sized knife, for me. I tend to shy away from neck knives, because all too often they are too undersized to actually be useful. The one other true neck knife that I have gotten that was a useful size was the old Camillus ARC, I think it was called. It has a little longer blade than the Izula, and is D2. But where it falls WAY short of the Izula is in the better designed sheath of the Izula, and the option of micarta scales. That is what really puts the Izula over the top for me. I don't know that i'll actually use it as a neck knife, but it WILL do quite well for me in deer harvesting, I'm sure.
I will concede the point that someone else made, I think in the "wrap vs. scales" thread, that with the scales, it feels somewhat like it you're just gripping a three-finger knife. But I wouldn't want the scales to cover the hole at the butt of the knife. I'm sure that hole will be useful in retaining the knife during "deer operations."
So, why do I think this makes me an official fanboy? Well, in about the past 5 weeks, I've purchased two ESEE-4's, a HEST, an RC-3, and now an Izula. Lord help me.
