Well tomorrow is the first day of deer season in Altoona, PA and I recently purchased an Izula... OD blade coat with OD paracord wrapping ( Me love OD long time ). I am planning to put my knife to good use by gutting the deer with it ( if i get one ). Im excited to see the shade of brown my paracord will take, after it is saturated with blood. It's going to look sick with the OD coated blade. I hope to post pictures if I have a successful hunt.;)

It will take on a nice shade but I don't think you'll appreciate the odor in a few days. :thumbdn:

Do you think that soaking it in alcohol will fix the smell and kill bacteria... And if so, will the alcohol do harm to the blade or coating

I think the only way you are going to get the blood, guts, and deer gravy out of the paracord is to cut it off and rewrap.

Or get the scales.

But, no, alcohol is not going to do anything to your Izula.

The coating should be fine, but you don't really need to soak it to kill the bacteria, dunking should be sufficient. Although you'll want to mix the alcohol with water (70-80% alcohol, 20-30% water), otherwise it evaporates too fast and can actually preserve the bacteria for the next time it gets moist.

Another solution to kill the odour is to stick the knife in the freezer for a while (this has the added benefit of not washing the colour out of the cord like the alcohol will).

Alcohol actually doesn't kill bacteria that produce spores (strains of Bacillus) And freezing only stops growth but once you take it out, growth/smell. continues.

You would be better off re-wrapping, If you really want to clean it, soak for 10 min in 409 (Alkyl), x-tra pine (5% Pine oil), Clorox bleach (2% hypochlorite) those will kill most bacteria including spores... Dont know if it'll discolor the para chord tho.

Or, just forget the paracord altogether for the blood and gore. IMO it is just gonna be a time consuming PITA.

Get scales for the IZULA or .. keep that one for general tasks that don't involve blood and gore and get an IZULA II for gutting and cleaning deer.

They come with micarta scales and cleanup will be a breeze.

Just a thought...... :)

Im in Clearfield County and same here for 1st day, My Izula will be my knife, worked great on squirrels and a turkey so far. Dont wrap mine . I cant get out this morning though,I have to wait till around 2pm. Good Luck this season.

You can get paracord in various shades of red and brown...I have some nice burgundy, and 'camo brown' for example...just sayin.

Thanks for the reply guys. Some sad new though... I sat for about 9 hours and didn't see a thing! Well better luck saturday (hopefully). I want to get some pics up.
Also, I think that I will just unwrap my Izula before i destroy the paracord lol. It seems too much of a hassle to preserve anyway.
