I have an Izula that has some smudges on the factory finish ... Would Esee refinish the knife? Im not that skilled I dont think .. Would it be cheaper to just purchase another one?

The company is ESEE, and no they will not do anything for the coating. ESEE has a no questions asked lifetime warranty but it doesn't cover rust or scratches in the coating. If it bothers you just strip it and force a patina.

The finish will come off with use, its inevitable. Strip this one like HardTripper said then get another one. The second one might have that perfect coating.

I used sandpaper. It took awhile and quite a bit of elbow grease. Started with 60grit to take it off. Then 150 up to 600 to take some of the scratches out of the steel.

You could get paint stripper that'll take it off much quicker.

Hi antman -

I am not an ESEE fanboy for my own reasons, but I can tell you that the good folks at ESEE would not warrant scratches or blemishes on the finish of a knife, nor would I expect that of them.

If the smudges bother you, then I would buy a new one, put the new one in my gunsafe and then sell or give the smudged one to someone who will use the knife.

I would not expect ESEE to warrant smudges on the finish of a knife any more than I would expect Goodyear to warrant wear on the tread of a tire.

The Izula is the type of knife made for use...

Personally, one of the first things I'll do to a coated knife is use it hard so it gets those nice scratches, smudges and even rust on the 1095 steel right away... I think they add character and make the knife look even cooler. They don't effect the knife in any way, even the rust.

If you want to keep it perfect, I suggest buying two. One for hard use, one for light tasks.

Zip Strip will have all that finish of in about 10 minutes...lots of muss, but little fuss. The surface underneath is very rough...probably prepped chemically. It will need to be sanded. Then go for it. I am not one for the forced patinas...just let them happen...but that's just me. I've stripped an ESEE-5 because I sort of goofed up a convexing job (which I had never gone down that road). Once sanded, that 1095 steel looks good.

If you take the coating off because its scratched, what are you going to do when you use it.....? Its a tool. Im just saying

Were you to go the route of stripping the textured powder coat finish off from the Izula, you can try using Permatex Gasket Remover or Solvent Kleene D-Zolve.
